Thought that this could be a good discussion on motherboards.

Yes, there are still B650's out there but they will become harder to find as time goes on. I decided that perhaps an X670E would be a bit better.

I have been look at HUB X670E reports on thermals and for sure want something that runs at 80c or lower.

Asrock looked to have some boards that were appealing, but until I know for sure that they have solved the issue with AM5, they are a no go.

Any thoughts/suggestions would be appreciated.

I have an ASRock x670E Steel Legend that's been running a 7800x3d for two years.  Nice board, and have had no issues, other than the universal slow boot when I first got it . . . but that wasn't unique to ASRock and has been resolved long ago with BIOS updates.

What's your budget? I've always gone with Gigabyte, until this 5090 self-igniting issue. So this time an Asus Rog Strix 870E, because "military grade sht". Not cheap though.

No higher than $300 Canadian. Plan is for a 98003xd.

Something with good vrms and good pcie lanes for the gpu/nvme.

I think that I have looked at so many videos and reddit posts that I have decision paralysis.

That's a very strange conclusion. B650 is still easy to get and otherwise you can get the B850, which is essentially the same chip but with a higher minimum spec for the boards.

It seems more like you are rationalizing going to the more expensive boards (which is fine).

Keep in mind that the X670E mainly offers more USB and SATA ports. Do you actually need that, because...

You absolutely don't need to get a X670E or even a X670 for that.

It is frustrating as I look at a few yt reviews, take a look at a few other sites and then always run across a few individuals who had issues with xyz board.  Yes nothing is perfect, but I need stable with a bit of room for growth re gpu and m.2 slots.

It takes me a good while to save up, so,  I have get things right first time.

I'd read on a few sites that X670E handles the lanes better and has more lanes as than the B850.

I remember reading about the gigabyte gpu board cracking issues and that put me off them in general.

I would happily go with asrock once they prove their boards are no longer cooking the X3d chips. Hopefully AMD/Asrock are working on it.

And for those who are interested, HUB does a review on the B850. The motherboard boxes surrounding Steve were pretty funny. VRM temps at 24:57

I just built 9 rigs with B850 chipset with Gigabyte boards and 9600X for office use tho, 32GB 6000MT and a 1TB 990Pro. Solid rigs and the board has all it needs if you stay in normal boundaries.

If you don't need the extras 870 has, 850 is a solid choice and about half the price.

Gigabyte Aorus X570S Master - Ryzen 5900X - Gskill 64GB 3200/CL14@3600/CL14 - Sapphire  Nitro+ 7800XT - 4x Samsung 980Pro 1TB - 1x Samsung 870 Evo 1TB - 1x SanDisc 120GB SSD - Heatkiller IV - MoRa3-360LT@9x120mm Noctua F12 - Corsair AXi-1200 - TiR5-Pro - Warthog Hotas - Saitek Combat Pedals - Asus XG27ACG QHD 180Hz - Corsair K70 RGB Pro - Win11 Pro/Linux - Phanteks Evolv-X

You always have a risk, including of messing up the install. If you spend less in the first place, then you have money left over for a possible replacement.

I think that the idea that if you spend a lot, you will avoid risk, is a bad take.

IMO, the best way is to keep a financial reserve (in general, not just for PC stuff), so you can take a hit. This goes for everyone except the most poor or the most rich.
