OmasRachE Posted September 1 Posted September 1 I recently completed both Arctic Thunder campaigns, following the developers’ recommended order. After writing a review to refelcteds campaign, I want to share my thoughts about Baltic version too. The connected campaign concept works brilliantly. Being able to live the story from different perspectives adds a huge amount of depth and makes the whole package much more immersive. It’s an approach that would fit many other scenarios too, and I really appreciate the effort that both creators put into making this possible. The voice acting is top-notch, bringing the characters to life and making the radio environment feel very authentic and dynamic. Combined with the great storytelling, the immersion is outstanding. The campaign has a grand, well-developed narrative that draws you in from the very beginning and doesn’t let go. On the practical side, I did encounter some challenges: sometimes it wasn’t easy for me to find the correct coordinates or acquire the intended targets. This may partly come down to my own skills or the limitations of DCS itself. Occasionally, units hidden in dense forests were almost impossible to spot, and on rare occasions I wasn’t entirely sure what the campaign expected me to do next. The last mission seemded to be bugged some way, at least there werde no other airplanes in the formation besides our hornets. Playing the mission in the F16 it looked much different. That said, these moments were the exception rather than the rule. Overall, the campaign ran smoothly and reliably and delivered a very complete and satisfying experience. For me, this was my first Baltic Dragon campaign, and it left me eager to explore more of his work in the future. Baltic Dragon’s Arctic Thunder is a masterfully crafted, immersive experience that combines superb voice acting, a gripping story, and the unique strength of the connected campaign format. Highly recommended to any Hornet pilot looking for a deep and memorable campaign. 1

Slick Twitchy Posted 6 hours ago Posted 6 hours ago I have such a hard time understanding the military parlance. But I am an idiot. I wish there was sub-set of information available maybe on the kneeboard or your flight kind of clarifying what we are doing "OK Devil 32 let's look for that Fulcrum at bearing 270" - I know dumbing it down negates the verisimilitude but KNOWING what I am actually doing would really make this campaign more accessible. To be fair, I find a lot of campaigns have the same issue (Persian Lion 1 &2 are the exception) CRX-Intel(R) Core(TM) i9-13900K;4090; Varjo Aero; Winwing UFC/HUD/MFDs/Throttle/PTO Panel/Combat Panel; Winwing F-18 joystick; Buttkickers; Monstertech flight seat; PointCTRL.
OmasRachE Posted 1 hour ago Author Posted 1 hour ago Yes this is a question of realism/immersion vs. accessibility. For me Badgers campaigns were a great starting point, I like them very much and when I come home late and nobody wants to fly with me, I still replay them from time to time, because it takes just 10 minutes to read the briefing and you get a step by step discription of what you will have to do. But as a fan of more realistic and challanging campaigns I realy apreciate that Baltic and Reflected didn´t make it too easy. The sorties are indeed well prepared a make a lot of sence. Luckily the military slang can be learnded and there are some usefull tools out there. Google keyword brevity codes and you will find much information. There are even kneeboard pages to download which you can save in the hornets kneeboard folder so that it will be persistant in every mission or make your one kneeboard pages by simply making a text file and save a sceenshot as png. There are also nice YT tutorials about BRAA calls and how to find a target with bullseye coordinates. I would also recomand to read the PDF briefings bevor starting DCS. So a mission can easily fill your evening. Another helpful thing is to learn basic BVR tactics so you know what to do when commiting a bandit group. Much of the information you are looking for is implicit. And if your short on time, consider to use immortal mode to avoid frustration by getting shot from a pop up threat after 2 hours of preparation and flying. You´ll get better with time and as you do, you will enjoy the campaign more and more.
