Mike_CK Posted yesterday at 10:35 PM Posted yesterday at 10:35 PM For me, it was all about trim. (Before I start…as said before…practice with the KC-130 and NOT the S-3). When you fly up to the tanker, slow down and match its speed as best you can. Once at whatever you feel is the same speed (close is good enough), trim the aircraft until it flies level with no roll when you take your hands off the stick. once you have trimmed, give it some gas and slowly approach the basket. If you start to oscillate, just come off the gas, match speeds, get yourself calmed down and lined up and give it a bit of gas. assuming you are 2-3 kts faster than the tanker when you make contact, do NOT come off the gas right away. The drag from the basket attached to your jet will slow you down a bit. if you are properly trimmed, you should be able to make small corrections without the jet “jumping”. i find trim to be even more important in the F-16 and F-4 using the boom but is still a big part of using the probe/drogue. as for curves, I use them and I think most do. But use the curves you have for general flight (meaning don’t adjust them just for tanking). Can’t remember what my Hornet curves are but probably around 16-20. You should have SOME curve or making small corrections at 300kts becomes difficult
MAXsenna Posted 17 hours ago Posted 17 hours ago fi ind trim to be even more important in the F-16 I assume you mean in roll, because F-16 and F/A-18 are FBW and trim themselves out in pitch, so there is no need to fight the system. 1
