When using the task "recovery tanker" in the mission editor, the S-3 used to fly a nice race track pattern following the aircraft carrier.

Now it's flying a circular pattern in front of the aircraft carrier.

Post a track and your .miz file.  Just did a quick test on the Caucasus map with air started S-3 tanker and given a minute or two for it to get itself into proper position it worked as expected.

Do you have ANY mods installed?  Double check that you picked the tanker version of the S-3 (not sure if that would make a difference).

But actually, the problem seems to be the speed.
I set 272kt GS & 6000ft to get around 250kt CAS, because it's around the Hornet max endurance speed.
At 260kt GS the Viking is doing race track patterns. At 263kt GS the Viking is doing circles (everything else being equal).
I didn't try 261kt and 262kt because such small change doesn't matter anymore.

I don't understand why that speed is a problem ? 250kt CAS isn't a crazy speed to refuel a jet fighter !

What's the default speed?  That's what I left it at and it worked.  250 seems pretty slow 🤔.

The default speed is around 226kt ground speed, meaning that at 6 000ft your air speed is even slower.

I was trying to set 272kt ground speed to get 250kt of air speed.

But that’s the problem with the the recovery tanker function.

As far as I'm concerned, that speed limit around 260kt ground speed is a bug.

OK, had some time to look at this in more detail.  What mods do you have installed?  Have you ran a repair since you uninstalled any mods?  This feels very much like a mod (or mod leftovers issue).
With your .miz I see what you're seeing.  The S3 starts doing a circular orbit.

However, if I recreate the mission fresh (only added the carrier and S3) I have no issues with the S3 doing a racetrack orbit.  I set it to 275 kts and 6,000 ft and added recover tanker on WP 1 (no issue with that) and it does a nice racetrack.  Something is messed up in your original .miz (which is what makes me think leftover mod).  Try recreating the basics in a fresh mission and see if it works.  I've attached my working version.

I don't have any mod on the core installation.

I had a few AI aircraft mods in saved games, but I removed them.

I'll try a repair.

Also the starting point was improving a mission done by a friend.

I might as well start over from scratch...
