Climbing out of England

Hi Reflected,

Firstly, I wanted to say I love your campaigns. The immersion and attention to detail is unreal.

I believe I have some potential bugs to your attention. The AI seems to be performing some unusual behaviors (go figure) when climbing after leaving England. These two problems might be related but they seem to be consistent across each mission so far (currently on mission 9). I understand the AI does AI things, so I apologize in advance if this is outside of your span of control.

  1. After beginning the climb, the AI will drop below 150 MPH and bring most of the squadron to stall due to the extreme AoA. This sometimes leads them to crash into each other.
    • To be clear, this isn't a "I cant keep up" , they just don't have the airspeed to climb consistently.
  2. The AI is consistently climbing to extreme altitudes.
    • Mission 9 is by far the most extreme as it appears that the AI never stops climbing until they reach Creil (excess of 30000ft).
    • Most other missions, the AI will climb ~20000 before descending to 12000.

Looking at the waypoints in the mission planner, it looks like the altitudes are set to 12000ft so I'm not sure what is going on. I replayed wolfpack 1: Mission 5 at random to see if these persist and didn't have the same issues.

Thanks again for all your hard work on these campaigns. Let me know if you have any questions.

Hey thanks for the heads up. Do you happen to have a track?

I also noticed the stall behavior lately, reported to ED, and they said it's because I disabled the use of 'afterburner' (WEP) for the AI lead and the AI is heavily loaded, but I think there's more to it.

I noticed the AI climbing to 30k feet even though it doesn't have to in totally different missions, we'll need to replicate it in a simple mission because ED needs a simple track to look at the problem. Thanks!

Update: upon further investigation, the AI doesn't do it because it doesn't have power. It only does it when it has wingmen, so it's definitely a core bug. I sent ED a reminder, it's in their hands now. Thanks for the heads up, let me know if you see it in any other campaigns.

Thanks for looking into it. I figured it was a core issue.

I'm not sure if this information will be useful to you, but I did perform three tests on mission 9. Sorry, I didn't think to grab the tracks.

  • Test 1: Stay put without taking off.
    • Whippet White successfully completed the mission while climbing to the appropriate altitudes and what seemed to be the correct climb rate.
  • Test 2: Take off and immediately land.
    • This allowed all of Whippet to take off and proceed with the mission.
    • The AI climbed to the appropriate altitude but two planes did crash into each other due to the slow climb rate.
  • Test 3: Execute the mission as planned.
    • Same as test 2, but the AI continued to climb to 20000+ ft. (I exited the mission after this point)
    • This was weird because it seems like my involvement caused the AI to climb non-stop

Note that I exited each mission after the initial climb.
