kraszus Posted September 20, 2009 Posted September 20, 2009 I've been practising these last couple of hours and have improved..slightly. I've been using FD on and no trimming and I can fly quite smoothly...in a straight line :P I FD off and trim when making small adjustments at low speeds. I still have problems turning though...even when I bank quite sharply, my turn rate us quite low; I've tried increasing pitch as I bank but this leads to a speedy loss in altitude. Countering this with more collective oftens leads to my rotors colliding. And stopping - presumably the correct way is to dump collective and pitch up?
159th_Viper Posted September 20, 2009 Posted September 20, 2009 And stopping - presumably the correct way is to dump collective and pitch up? Quickest is a 360: Hard Full Left/Right Rudder, 90 Degree bank and into a Hover facing the way you came - Works for Me. To make a coordinated turn, maintain speed and altitude, you should pitch up a bit, stick and rudder to left/right and raise collective. Make coordinated turns - "ball" centered. This will be intuitive in the not-too-far future:smilewink:. But maintaining both alt and speed works below a specified speed. Evy helo has a speed limitation that you cannot turn maintaining both speed and altitude beyond this, wherever you are raising collective. This speed is unique to each helo, according to its airframe, wings if have any, rotor, engine performance; for example, 250 km/h for Mi-24, theoretically. Beyond this speed, you should maintain altitude (particularly at low level:D) in turning, this will cause a bit speed loss. The method is the same, pitch a bit up, stick and rudder to left/right, raise the collective, maintain bank angle and altitude. At high speeds (collective is in your armpit:)), as you suddenly start to turn with high bank angle, you should lower collective a bit: you cannot maintain this airspeed, so it is not a factor, and your blades won't collide as you stick to the left/right. The others are the same as above. Ohh, before anyone says that it's a game, no one will evaluate our flights, maintained bank angles and airspeeds, we don't need coordinated turns... It's a game, but not an arcade stuff. And, we do need coordinated handling, for example, to avoid blade collision in high adrenaline situations. As 159th_Viper said, to stop with a 360° is quickest and great fun, but you should watch the G-meter as well. Cheers! За всю историю никто и никогда не сумел завоевать Афганистан. Hикто и никогда
VMFA117_Poko Posted September 20, 2009 Posted September 20, 2009 (...) And stopping - presumably the correct way is to dump collective and pitch up? Transition from forward flight to hover is quite simple. Rise the nose to about 10 degrees and operate collective to maintain level flight (watch the viarometer - VSI). Slower you fly - more power you need. At an IAS below 50 km/h, do not exceed a sink rate of 5 m/s to avoid entering into a “vortex ring” state. There is training track showing this transition.
RobC Posted September 21, 2009 Posted September 21, 2009 Advice from a heli noobie: Make sure you are really co-ordinating both the collective and the rudders when you turn, its not like a fixed wing plane where you do everything with bank, you really need to make sure you are using your rudders properly for a smooth turn. Once I figured that out it sure made things a whole lot easier. Plenty of better and more detailed advice from much more experienced people in here though ;) Edit: The producers notes watching wags fly around with audio were really helpful for me as well, can find them on youtube or on the main download site.
