I just purchased parts for my new rig yesterday.

I went with the following components:

ASUS P7P55D PRO LGA 1156 Intel P55 ATX Intel Motherboard

Intel Core i7 860 Lynnfield 2.8GHz LGA 1156 95W Quad-Core Processor

Mushkin 4GB (2 x 2GB) 240-Pin DDR3 SDRAM DDR3 2000 (PC3 16000).

GTX-275/9800GT combo (1X 28” Viewsonic & 2X 22” Samsung) (Already using these)

(I could try 2x GTX260s in SLI (Not sure if I want this yet. Never been a big fan of SLI but I have the cards if I want to try it.))

I will use my existing X-FI for sound.

I will attempt to adapt my Ultra Chilltec TEC cooler (Socket 775) to fit on the newer 1156. There is about a 2mm difference in the spacing of the mounting holes.

OS Windows 7 Ultimate x64

I am replacing an Asus P5Q-PRO with an E8600 C2D @ 4.0 GHz so my expectations are not that high for a huge performance improvement. I hope I am not disappointed and realize at least some good over clocking and perceptible performance gains even over such a fast and stable existing system.

I think the choices I made here were fairly sound as far as value for the money goes. It is the newest platform/Socket (for now) and doesn’t break the bank for the core components. With any luck it will mature into as fine a choice as the P5Q-Pro and E-8600 turned out to be for me.

The parts should arrive by the middle of next week. I will let you know how the build turns out and whether I would recommend this configuration as whole heartedly as my last one.:)

I love the excitement of building a new rig. So fresh and clean and you know the performance is going to be there. Good luck and congrats.

congrats on the new rig. it will run games as well as an i7-9xx series system, from all the online testing I've seen. One word of caution though about overclocking, check out this link I read this morning. It may be nothing, but be aware: http://www.fudzilla.com/content/view/16000/1/

Yes I read that. It seems to be an issue when over clocking past 4.2GHZ with foxconn sockets. I am going to check my CPU as soon as my water block arrives next week. I will return my Asus board if I see this issue and find one with one of the other types of Sockets. I will also phone Intel and ask what they can tell me about this issue. I think it is more likely that some bad out of spec sockets made it into some of these boards rather then that ALL foxconn socket boards are affected.

Thank you for the heads up and even though I was aware of this issue I will be watching it closely. This news broke exactly one day after my parts arrived and my system was built.

Thankfully I still have time to return my board. The question is which boards are absolutely using the other sockets? I can't seem to find one besides EVGA and those are supposed to be hit or miss.

Update:

Returned the Asus and went with an EVGA P-55 FTW (LOTES Socket)

to avoid the foxconn issue.

Also one of the mushkin sticks failed and I returned them as well.

I replaced it with 8GB of GSkill Trident DDR3-2000

I only have 4GB installed while I test the OC.

So far it rocks pretty good. Got the i860 to 4.2GHz

See screenshot.
