drbaker Posted January 12, 2010 Posted January 12, 2010 I am still playing the georgean havoc campaign. Did not try the other one yet. Will vote As soon as i finished both. Hey gang! Sorry to ask this in the part of the forum, but just installed Balck Shark and can't get flying. Go to the fly mode and have the "press pause/break to start" message. How do I get beyond this. Thx. --dave b
EtherealN Posted January 12, 2010 Posted January 12, 2010 You press the Pause/Break key. ;) So it is not the "P" key, as is used for Pause in many games, it's the actual Pause/Break key. Some keyboards, especially laptop keyboards, may require that you hold down a special FN button to access that key, and some keyboards (Apple computers) may not have the key at all. In the latter case, you can set it to another key using the options screen. drbaker Posted January 13, 2010 Author Posted January 13, 2010 Thanks. I have a new Dell XPS 16 laptop with no pause/break key. I called Dell and was told the keyboard do not have such a key. Any workaround to start flying without clicking a pause/break key? Thanks again for any help. Otherwise I'll have to return the software.
EtherealN Posted January 13, 2010 Posted January 13, 2010 (edited) As mentioned, open the options screen and set a different key for the pause function. drbaker Posted January 13, 2010 Author Posted January 13, 2010 Thanks. I tried different combinations of modifiers for "pause" but nothing works. Oh, well I guess I will have to return this game. :>(
Panzertard Posted January 13, 2010 Posted January 13, 2010 Did you try to assign Pause to another key like Ethereal showed you in post #4? You tried to use modifiers - you should'nt use modifiers CTRL/SHIFT/ALT when pressing pause. You may have to use the "FN" key on your laptop + the Pause/break. Otherwise - go into the Options->controls and reassign Pause to f.ex F12 or something. The mind is like a parachute. It only works when it's open | The important thing is not to stop questioning
drbaker Posted January 13, 2010 Author Posted January 13, 2010 Yes, I did. I tried different combinations with key button and key button + modifier including "tab", ":", "9", etc. Those already assigned, I cleared them so that they would not compete with my selections for "pause". Sadly, nothing works yet.
fred99 Posted January 13, 2010 Posted January 13, 2010 On my old keyboard the Pause / break key is labeled "Attr", maybe you have this key somewhere?
Panzertard Posted January 13, 2010 Posted January 13, 2010 And you're really sure it not due to this; The sim does not respond to keyboard commands and I cannot un-pause the sim. I’m unable to save and restore my joystick profiles. The mind is like a parachute. It only works when it's open | The important thing is not to stop questioning

Sadly, nothing works yet.I can suggest that you assign new pause commang in REAL flight model but tried to fly GAME flight model. Or vice versa. drbaker Posted January 13, 2010 Author Posted January 13, 2010 Thanks to all for your help. I am in real mode and have spent hours trying different keys or key/modifier combos and nothing...so I return the software. Thanks again.
EtherealN Posted January 13, 2010 Posted January 13, 2010 Did you try setting it to "P", with no modifiers? If you just add a modifier to the Pause key it'll obviously not work. Just set it to the P button, or numpad enter or whatever like that. Panzertard, I looked up that computer model and it does indeed not have the Pause/Break key - not even under an FN selection. So I've added Dell to my list of noob hardware makers alongside Apple and Microsoft. :P [sIGPIC][/sIGPIC] Daniel "EtherealN" Agorander | Даниэль "эфирныйн" Агорандер Intel i7 2600K @ 4.4GHz, ASUS Sabertooth P67, 8GB Corsair Vengeance @ 1600MHz, ASUS GTX 560Ti DirectCU II 1GB, Samsung 830series 512GB SSD, Corsair AX850w, two BENQ screens and TM HOTAS Warthog DCS: A-10C Warthog FAQ | DCS: P-51D FAQ | Remember to read the Forum Rules | | | Life of a Game Tester

EtherealN Posted January 13, 2010 Posted January 13, 2010 Actually, there are several specialized laptop manufacturers that specifically build gaming laptops. They tend to be heavier, of course, but they are available including ones with top-range SLI cards. Rockdirect being my own favourite. But of course, for most people the main purpose of their computer isn't gaming, it's a work tool that might happen to offer ability for gaming as well. My new ASUS netbook is actually filled with games (though I had to overclock the Intel graphics chip). :P [sIGPIC][/sIGPIC] Daniel "EtherealN" Agorander | Даниэль "эфирныйн" Агорандер Intel i7 2600K @ 4.4GHz, ASUS Sabertooth P67, 8GB Corsair Vengeance @ 1600MHz, ASUS GTX 560Ti DirectCU II 1GB, Samsung 830series 512GB SSD, Corsair AX850w, two BENQ screens and TM HOTAS Warthog DCS: A-10C Warthog FAQ | DCS: P-51D FAQ | Remember to read the Forum Rules | | | Life of a Game Tester
Speed_2 Posted January 13, 2010 Posted January 13, 2010 (edited) drbaker, I'm surprised you don't have an external keyboard. Most people I know, when using a laptop from a fixed location, use an external USB, or even wireless, full-size keyboard. When I was serious about gaming on my old Dell laptop, not only did I have an external keyboard, I had an external mouse (duh), external speakers, and an external monitor, and a joystick. When I wanted to use my laptop for gaming, I'd just hook it up. Laptops work fine for gaming, you just can't try to use the built-in hardware (specifically the mouse and to a less extent, the keyboard) for something they weren't designed to do. DaddySchlich Posted September 6, 2010 Posted September 6, 2010 I thought I'd add to the community's knowledge. I have a newly purchased Sony VAIO that has Insert/Pause on one key, and Delete/Break on another. In Options/Controls, the Pause function is mapped to the Pause key, and there is no Break function. I did, however, discover that Fn-Pause successfully started things running!! Hope this helps others out there. Daddy Schlich
