sweinhart3 Posted April 2, 2010 Posted April 2, 2010 Not for a 920. A 920 stock runs at 2.66GHz. For a 975 it would be. Besides, I have no idea how to overclock. The manufacturer did it at my request. The overclocking is covered by the warranty because the manufacturer did it. Original quote stated 2.7Mhz as opposed to 2.7Ghz. Thats slower than the 286 when it was out. Anyway, cant remember where I read it, I think on an Intel forum there are plans to release 2 more lower priced i7 extreme chips in July/August timeframe. It wont have 6 cores and not clocked as high but the multipliers will be unlocked and they wont cost $1000 Intel i7 990X, 6GB DDR3, Nvidia GTX 470 x2 SLI, Win 7 x64 http://picasaweb.google.com/sweinhart
Konovalov Posted April 2, 2010 Posted April 2, 2010 I've just built a new rig for under 1000 Euros. Frame rates are up in the 40's: I have over clocked the i5-750 to 3.8 Ghz and its holding steady at 50C with full load on all 4 cores. (with a good cooler.) I did clock at 4.2 Ghz but this was getting too hot at full load. Old GPU Nvidia 8800 GTX is being used in the new system. Flight sims are CPU intensive and this is usually the bottleneck if you have a reasonable GPU, so a clocked i5 750 is the way to go. MSI CD-53 mobo - 150 Euros (OK if your not planning SLI as its only got one slot) Yep that is a smart value build you have there. I'm still torn between and i5-750 based system or a higher priced i7-930 based system for my new build. What was the CPU HSF cooler that you have used on your rig out of interest? 4.2Ghz o/c would have been a stonking overclock on that i5-750. (Only 24 Euros!) If you went for a Freezer EXTREME or similar, I'm sure you could get stable at 4.2 Ghz
