Hi all,

Im thinking of buying a HD ready 20.1" lcd monitor instead of a new tv and computer screen. The reason for the HD is so that i can run at 1600*1200@60hz through the computer.

The question is, how smooth are the lcd monitors with 16ms reaction time and the 25ms reaction times? Is it noticable in lockon or does the reaction time not really effect the quality in game??

Also how do they go in FPS games ie far cry, doom 3?

I have seen many people running lcd's on this forum so any input woud be appreciated.

Cheers

Well, I run two LCD's: a 17" (VP-171b) and a 20.1" (VP-201b), both from Viewsonic. I run sims like Lockon, Falcon4, and MSFS2K4 and also FPS's like HL2, Far Cry, Doom3, Splinter Cell, ...

I think both of these monitors are better than the CRT's I had before...they certainly feel better on the eyes after long play periods. The colors are great & I have not noticed any smearing or image degradation in any of the games that I play and I run usually at max resolution (1600 x x1200 for the 20" and 1280 x 1024 for the 17"). I prefer the "b" Viewsonic versions because they have a thin black bezel which is not noticeable when playing with the lights dimmed. Also note that these are the Viewsonic VP series...they have others (less expensive) which are not as good IMHO.

I don't think I made a mistake when getting either of these. And as a bonus, they both rotate 90 degrees and the 201b has a 4-port USB hub built in. Both also have internal power supplies so plug directly into the power socket with no transformers. They run cool so I have nio concerns with my TrackIR on top of the big one.

I purchased from NewEgg and had no pixels out when I received them.

There are lots of others out there as well. Good luck...

In addition to what I wrote at Ubi - the fact that an LCD/TFT screen uses a constant backlight and passes the light through filters means that you get a solid light, not one beam flickering at high speed as in a CRT. Some people insist that proper high refresh rates cure this problem in a good CRT, but I wouldn't go back at the moment.

Smearing is down to response time, of course. Lower the response time, less smearing.

Image degradation - CRTs usually offer more colours, but I've never been able to tell the tiny shades more they can do.

Pixel size is fixed on LCD screens - each pixel is actually physical. So beware resolutions and the size of the pixels on an LCD screen . . . . changing away from the "native" resolution does decrease the image quality, noticably for me.

imho ms reaction times are way overrated. If anyone can see the difference between a 11ms delay and a 18ms delay in any fps on a LAN, my hat goes off to them.

There is a good deal right now at newegg.com on a samsung 21.3" LCD, $580 after $100 mail in rebate. It's 25ms tho...too slow or close enough?

I'm thinkin' that sounds too killer to pass up...

I couldn't resist...that's the size and price I want, and I don't see any faster ones in that size or price range, so I'll give 'er a go. I'll yell here as a warning if it just sucks at 25ms.

The 12ms gaming screens seem to mostly be little 17 inchers...yuck.

Bigfoot, if that's the 213T I think you're going to like it. The response time issue seems to differ from person to person, but I for example don't have problems with 25ms. You'll have to try it yourself, though.

Personally I only have two good things to say about LCD screens, namely that they are small and they consume very little power.

CRTs are bulky, heavy and power hungry. They also have better contrast, colour rendition and response times than any competing imaging technology. And they can offer better resolution - both in pixels per image and pixels per inch - than either plasma or LCD can today or in the near future. Their primary technical drawback is that the front screen becomes very expensive and heavy once you move past 32" and this is where LCD, Plasma and back-projection screens can beat CRTs - large screen viewing.

That being said, my 21" CRT eats up a huge amount of desk space, and I risk back injury every time I move it. If I had lived in a warm country I'd probably also be wasting quite a bit of money on wasted heat emanating from it, but living in the arctics all the heat it radiates becomes ambient heat I don't need to generate in my wall-mounted electic heaters so that's actually a zero-sum game.

If you go TFT you'll want to be confident that the rest of your system is up to driving LO-MAC at the native resolution of your screen. Dropping down to a lower resolution will mean a very noticeable drop in image quality.

I have a 21" CRT on my desktop and a 17" widescreen TFT on my laptop (1920x1200). Both give an excellent picture, but I think the TFT edges it. You can't beat a TFT for clarity in its native resolution (for my money). Once you move away from native res, you're in trouble.

Really nice FRIGGIN 'UGE LCD, but the 25ms thing is really a bit too slow for shooters, gets blurry when you turn fast. Luckily, I like flightsims better than quake types, and it's not too bad in those. Lomac is really nice actually.

In x-plane, when I turn away from the main front panel, I can see a slight ghosting as the panel disappears.

Maybe someday huge LCD's will get faster refresh rates and then we'll have to wait for the prices to drop again after that.

No dead pixels and beautiful colors/contrast. ...and bigger than a 21" crt monitor...
