Lancelot Posted April 29, 2010 Posted April 29, 2010 Hi, On the targetting display control panel of the black shark, we have the tracer switch and color filter optics, and they have this text on the switch and dial: TRACER SWITCH: TP OTKA COLOR FILTER OPTIC DIAL: CO (more than a O its a "fi" symbol) K Half circle Full circle Asterisk ATK IOTA NA NY What do they mean? Literally. Need to know for something i´m doing. I know they have noh function, its because in reality they are noh longer used, because its classified, or just ED decided not to model them for whatever reason. Just curious about it. Thanks! :)
Frederf Posted April 29, 2010 Posted April 29, 2010 Tracer I have no idea. Maybe the cannon's AP rounds can be fired in a way that turns on the tracers or not? Maybe there's a virtual screen-writing that will draw a virtual tracer on the Shkval screen? No idea. The color filter optics on the other hand is definitely a Shkval function. Snow, low-light, overcast, ocean type of imaging environments. I'm pretty sure it's a real-life functionality that's just not modeled in DCS: BS. If it's primarily to aid in the image processing of the automatic tracker I can see why since the DCS code just flags objects as "lockable" instead of going through all the trouble of rendering the image and then trying to pick tank-like shapes out of it.

If i understood correctly, the RL shkval has nowhere near the sophistication and processing power to do shape recognition. What it does is just trace a blob of contrast. But you are of course right that the ingame version does no image processing at all. Good, fast, cheap. Choose any two. Come let's eat grandpa! Use punctuation, save lives!
Frederf Posted April 30, 2010 Posted April 30, 2010 Ja, that's what I meant. A shape being a localized area of high contrast.
Lancelot Posted April 30, 2010 Author Posted April 30, 2010 ...The color filter optics on the other hand is definitely a Shkval function. Snow, low-light, overcast, ocean type of imaging environments. ... Which is which on the filter knob? Do you know?
Frederf Posted April 30, 2010 Posted April 30, 2010 It's on the target display control panel, center in the cockpit right below the IT-23 bright/contrast knobs. The knob on the lower right of that panel (9 positions) is the color filter knob. (FM 6-56). The tracer switch is the one just to the left of the filter knob.
bumfire Posted April 30, 2010 Posted April 30, 2010 I know the colour filters is for different weather conditions, e.g too bright or dull etc etc, what they actually mean I dont know, the only thing I do know is that they are for different daylight conditions. I would say, take a look at the manual, but its doubtful the manual will explain what all the settings mean.
Lancelot Posted May 3, 2010 Author Posted May 3, 2010 I would say, take a look at the manual, but its doubtful the manual will explain what all the settings mean. It doesn´t, that´s why i asked here. Thanks a lot anyway, its been still informative and to some degree helpful. For the avionics quick guide i´m making, the translations of the diferent settings will have to be left blank. :)
