I realize I need to stay locked on the target after I fire, but for how long? I was in campaign using them and not a single one out of 5 hit.

In the bottom left of the HUD you have two numbers counting down - the first is until pitbull, the second impact. Support your missile until the first number reaches zero.

Also, do not launch at RMAX - just because it gives you a light does not mean you can actually kill anything. Typically you'll want to be at 20nm or closer to be reasonably sure of a kill, when in head-on-aspect. Altitude also has a very severe impact on this - the lower you and/or your target is, the shorter your range.

Note though that in lookdown shots you need to be closer than you want to be to actually guarantee a kill. A good pilot might be able to find refuge in the clutter notch and cause you and your missile to lose lock.
