zakobi Posted June 12, 2010 Posted June 12, 2010 There's a lot of games today that have build in benchmarks to measurer hos good then run under load etc. But many of these games always seems to rely mostly on the GPU, rather than the CPU as DCS does. So I was thinking, ED, could you please include a benchmarking program in future DCS modules? It will also make it easier to run test to see if ones tweaks have helped. :pilotfly:
Nate--IRL-- Posted June 12, 2010 Posted June 12, 2010 Another good reason to have a built in benchmark is that hardware review sites might include DCS when testing new hardware, thus giving DCS more exposure. EtherealN Posted June 12, 2010 Posted June 12, 2010 (edited) You don't need a benchmark feature, you just need a benchmark track. Proceedure: 1 - Start FRAPS (EDIT: or any framecounter application you trust the most) 2 - Start DCS 3 - Start a mission. 4 - Close the mission. (EDIT: This allows windows pre-caching and such an extra chance to work, in those cases where one wants to not be hindered more than necessary by HDD lag. Obviously N/A on computers that have those features disabled. Also, if the specific thing you are investigating is HDD performance impact on DCS, skip that. :P ) 5 - Start the track. 6 - Record FPS with FRAPS 7 - Profit. ;) The reason first person shooters use separate "benchmark" features is that they do not have a fully integrated method of performing exact replays that still use the same code outside of the "benchmark" feature. The only thing a "benchmark feature" does is exactly the same as what DCS, FC2 and FC1 already does - it starts a game session with a specific input through the session. What you are basically talking for is an extra GUI button that does the exact same thing as the Replay button but without the freedom to select track. JasonJ Posted June 13, 2010 Posted June 13, 2010 I found Ctrl + Pause/Break key useful in game to show current FPS if you want some simple feedback how your tweaking/testing has changed performance.
