Madman777 Posted June 25, 2010 Posted June 25, 2010 Hello pilots! Question, Does anyone have a Q6600 overclocked to anything above 3Ghz? I can't OC right now, because my HP motherboard. So I'm thinking instead of buying a new PC (money is tight) I can get a new motherboard and OC my Q6600 to get better frames, because right now I'm only getting about 20-25fps on low settings and it dips to the low teens as well Does anyone think I'll see a major improvement (DCS Blackshark, Arma2..etc) if I went from 2.4Ghz to 3.2Ghz or higher? I have; Q6600 @ 2.4Ghz 8800GT 512MB 3GB RAM Windows 7 64bit Thanks! i7-12700k, 32GB Ram, RTX 3060 12GB, TrackIR 5, Lots of SSD Space, etc etc DCS World - All the cool modules
SuDepp Posted June 25, 2010 Posted June 25, 2010 DCS runs like a charm at my system, but U will have to invest in a new graficcard for sure! If U want to fly the shark (what resolution?) properly with some mods enabled U definately want your cpu oґclocked AND a new geforce (GTX 260 = 180$) Beneath, what mainboard do U have?! Maybe it can be forced to do more than 3GHz?! ..sad but true ;) Greets S@uDepp // Hasi @4,5 GHz @ H100i // Asrock Z87M Extreme 4 // Avirex 4x4GB // PALIT 1070 GTX SuperJetStream // Corsair 350D // Plextor extern // DELL 2407WFP // Razer Lancehead // 2xThrustmaster T.16000M + Saitek Pedals Pro // Oculus Rift // 3x amBX // Win10 Pro x64
Moa Posted June 25, 2010 Posted June 25, 2010 If money is tight you could look at an AMD AM3 system. The AM3 will last more years than an Intel motherboard, which means you can get a budget CPU now and upgrade to a Phenom II x6 1090T when you get a chance (which has great performance and performance-per-dollar, which matters since your budget is limited). Depending on your memory you may be able to re-use it.
Sov13t Posted June 25, 2010 Posted June 25, 2010 I am running Q66 at 3.0ghz. But I believe in your case the problem is not the CPU but the Video Card. 8 Series are getting old. Recommend getting a GTS 240/250. [sIGPIC][/sIGPIC] 51st PVO Regiment | Forum | Statistics DCS: MiG-21Bis
ddahlstrom Posted June 27, 2010 Posted June 27, 2010 OC on that CPU is usually easy. I've been running mine at 3.2 for about 2 years with an 8800GTS 512. BS runs very smooth for the most part, but at full resolution (for me that's 1920x1600) I still get some stuttering over congested areas. There is a fairly substantial improvement going from 2.4 to 3.2, but I don't think I'd be willing to spend much money for a new MB to support an aging CPU.

emenance Posted June 28, 2010 Posted June 28, 2010 I like 3.0 on my q6600 go and a 4870 dark knight vc. Madman777 Posted June 28, 2010 Author Posted June 28, 2010 Hmmm thanks for the response guys. I knew it would have to come to this, but I will just put the money away and save for a new system. Buying just parts should make it cheaper. DTWD Posted June 28, 2010 Posted June 28, 2010 How very odd, I am running my Q6600 at 3.2 (but only relativly recently) and I am running everything pretty much on max (maybe not water) at 1920x1200 with very little slow down. Occasionally it dips, but it picks itself back up again and it's fine from then on in. Since the patch I now get a dip when I activate the schval, but other than that it's usually fine. It's rarely ever unplayable, during the dips it is a bit difficult to fly but they only last a second or so and they happen rarely. I would get a decent cooler and mobo on that CPU and overclock it. I used to have a 8800 GT which toasted itself and I got a 9800GTX 512 as a warranty replacment, not a great deal of difference between the cards (the 88 and 98 series are effectivly the same card), I don't believe you need to be upgrading that, especially as your short of cash. In the ideal world yes, but CPU will make a biggest difference. Regards [sIGPIC][/sIGPIC]
DTWD Posted June 28, 2010 Posted June 28, 2010 Oh and just to add, when I am playing BS I can hear the CPU cooler step up the fan speed but the GPU barely get's going, even running loads of AA/AF. Regards [sIGPIC][/sIGPIC]

So it might be worth it to OC my Q6600, and then invest in a better graphics card. I get boost from CPU and GPU. I can do that under $400 I think. I hope. I just realized by RAM is budget RAM, and it's only DDR2 533mhz. So that would require me to upgrade the RAM as well...eewww. Oh well. i7-12700k, 32GB Ram, RTX 3060 12GB, TrackIR 5, Lots of SSD Space, etc etc DCS World - All the cool modules

Go RAM, Cooler, Mobo and possibly a new PSU (depends what you have and how far you can go with it to OC) then OC it. See where you are after that. An 8800GT is not a (major at least) bottle kneck on a CPU optimised game. Regards [sIGPIC][/sIGPIC]

My PSU I bought two months ago, it's a brand name 750w (forget what kind..lol) I have a good feeling that going from 2.4Ghz to over 3Ghz will make a huge difference. DTWD Posted June 29, 2010 Posted June 29, 2010 You might be able to go quite a bit higher than 3GHz, however 3 is a nice number to start with. I ran at that for quite a while until someone suggested 3.2 was a better multiplier setting. 1 Regards [sIGPIC][/sIGPIC]

I guess I can go as high as my cooler can keep the CPU cool. Was looking at the Corsair H50 liquid cooling, looks pretty neat and easy to install. If I can get good cooling like that I might be able to hit 3.6GHz stable..maybe...we shall see I guess. i7-12700k, 32GB Ram, RTX 3060 12GB, TrackIR 5, Lots of SSD Space, etc etc DCS World - All the cool modules
Madman777 Posted July 6, 2010 Author Posted July 6, 2010 (edited) Mission accomplished. It's amazing was an extra 800Mhz can do. I bought the following, Corsair H50 CPU water cooler ($80) Asus P5N-D ($100) OCZ 4GB DDR2-800 ($110) Overclocked my Q6600 from 2.4Ghz to 3.2Ghz. I was getting 15-25 FPS at low settings before. Now I'm getting 30-60FPS with all settings on high, including AA & AF at 16x. FINALLY!! Finally after 2 years and over a thousand hours of flying I can finally fly this bird without any interruptions. It's like a whole new sim now. Even recording with FRAPS I still get over 20FPS on high settings! Looks like the i7 will have to wait...ahahah. Edited July 6, 2010 by Madman777 i7-12700k, 32GB Ram, RTX 3060 12GB, TrackIR 5, Lots of SSD Space, etc etc DCS World - All the cool modules
Kristof Posted July 27, 2010 Posted July 27, 2010 Hehe, I run my q6600 from 2.4ghz to 3.6ghz...air cooled. I get around 28C idle temp. :)
