Longbow Posted July 18, 2010 Posted July 18, 2010 I recently saw a few USAF F-15 & F-16 aircraft come into land, but as they were doing so, they gave off two fairly loud beeps, on several occasions. Anyone know what this is about? And in case I wasn't clear, these are beeps that can be heard from the ground, not in cockpit beeps. [ Stick: HOTAS Cougar ] [ HT: TrackIR4 ]
Avilator Posted July 18, 2010 Posted July 18, 2010 Ummm, a "landing alarm" instead of a backup alarm?:dunno: As in, "Get outta my way, I'm landing!":D I only respond to that little mechanical voice that says "Terrain! Terrain! Pull Up! Pull Up!" Who can say what is impossible, for the dream of yesterday is the hope of today and the reality of tomorrow. -Robert Goddard "A hybrid. Longbow Posted July 18, 2010 Author Posted July 18, 2010 Found a video of it . The sound can be heard around 3:13. [ Stick: HOTAS Cougar ] [ HT: TrackIR4 ]
Python Posted July 18, 2010 Posted July 18, 2010 (edited) Im not sure exactly what it is but i think its something mechanical on the aircraft itself. The F-16 occasionally makes a similar noise before it goes into afterburn and the Tornado makes the same noise when its reverse thrust engages. Im sure someone will come along and be more helpfull soon :pilotfly: Found this, makes that sound several times. watch from 50 seconds. Edited July 18, 2010 by Python [sIGPIC][/sIGPIC]
Panzertard Posted July 18, 2010 Posted July 18, 2010 Just a guess, can't watch the video right now - Outer / middle / inner marker perhaps? The mind is like a parachute. It only works when it's open | The important thing is not to stop questioning
mvsgas Posted July 18, 2010 Posted July 18, 2010 (edited) Is a PW engine thing. Simple answer, air used to move the exhaust nozzle from open to close and vise verse. The PW engine uses 13th Stage bleed air ( air coming from the 13th stage of compression of N-2) to actuate or spin the Convergent Exhaust Nozzle Control (CENC) which in term spins flex shaft that moves 4 actuator to move the nozzle to the correct position to ensure proper thrust, help control N1 speed and help diminished or prevent Stalls/Stagnation. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bernoulli%27s_principle Edited July 18, 2010 by mvsgas 2 To whom it may concern, I am an idiot, unfortunately for the world, I have a internet connection and a fondness for beer....apologies for that. Longbow Posted July 18, 2010 Author Posted July 18, 2010 That answer that then, thanks Python / mvsgas. :) [ Stick: HOTAS Cougar ] [ HT: TrackIR4 ]

topol-m Posted July 20, 2010 Posted July 20, 2010 Another example of this sound 1:19, 1:37, 1:43, 1:48...: [sIGPIC][/sIGPIC]
Agg Posted July 21, 2010 Posted July 21, 2010 Ive always liked that sound, almost makes them seem alive :P
Fjordmonkey Posted July 28, 2010 Posted July 28, 2010 I love that sound. Reminds me of working on the RNoAF F16's during my military service here. Especially fun when they slam the throttle to the detent. First the tweet, then an insane roar as the engine spools up. Aahh, the memories... Regards Fjordmonkey Clustermunitions is just another way of saying that you don't like someone. I used to like people, then people ruined that for me.
