Doing nothing is really not much of a choice, and not my best option. I still fly Janes FA-18. Graphics are horrendous but nobody has done (or probably will do) more realistic carrier ops. VNAO has better graphics, without question.

 

FSX isn't a combat simulator, we can all agree on that. That's good for just what it was intended for. Not the same thing.

 

Seven-G, well, let's see what they finally come up with.

 

I am interested to learn more about your direct X overlay work.

 

In any case, I am very impressed with all of this work that your group has done. Amazing stuff.

No 'wiggle room'. You can re-skin a cockpit by changing the bitmap ('texture') for that aircraft. Doesn't change the instruments, so is cosmetic only.

 

The only other current way around is to do an overlay - as I mentioned.

 

There is no DCS:Hornet planned (at least not in public).

 

So your choices are:

1) Do nothing.

2) VNAO mod. Visuals great. Cockpit not accurate. Good simulated combat.

3) FSX (eg. SuperBug). Cockpit good. Simulated 'combat' is rubbish.

4) X-plane. Mod it yourself. Combat better than FSX but still not good, or

5) seven-G (freeware). Cockpit good. Limited combat. A work in progress.

 

Of these the VNAO mod is the least-bad IMHO if you actually want to do carrier and combat ops, although clearly not perfect (if that matters, then number 1 is your best option).

 

It is possible to mod a new cockpit, but you cannot include the HUD, MFDs or TV screens IIRC, as these are hard coded.

The VNAO Flaming Cliffs 2.0 mods are now publicly released. You can download them from the VNAO recruiting page:

Please remember to make a backup of your LockOn installation (copy your LockOn install directory) before installing these mods - just in case it conflicts with any other mods you may have installed.

 

Further enhancements to this mod are being planned (new aircraft, possibly A6 for example), there is more to come. Meanwhile, credit to the VNAO mod team:

 

  • VF-84_MadMax skins, coordination
  • VF-143_Wraith flight models
  • 59th_Jack skins
  • VP_Blaze aircraft meshes
  • VBA_Racer aircraft meshes
  • SkyPat ModMan 7.3 installer

Thanks Moa...I don't have time right now to test but I assume that this is replacing the existing F-14,F-18 and should not effect other aircraft so can it be included in the regular server without causing issues for people who don't have the Mod...I don't know about you guys but I really enjoyed some of these Mods and that includes the Mig-21 Mod by beczl in FC1.

Hi Ali,

Unfortunately it won't work on regular servers that require 'pristine' installs of LockOn eg. 104th.

 

I've got it scheduled to document step-by-step how to have multiple side-by-side LockOn installs that can be used to run incompatible mods (for example EFA will not work with VNAO). Unfortunately such clashes are inevitable due to the design of some of the LockOn LUA files that use running indexes for table item identifiers rather than order-independent identitifiers (although some of the Lua files do it properly). This is a well known-problem when dealing with databases (albiet in Lua files in this instance).

 

Long term I'd like to merge the EFA and VNAO mods (including the country mod etc) so that a single mega-mod install would sort it out painlessly for everyone - but don't know yet when I'll get time to do that.

 

So, the VNAO mod can only be used on the VNAO Dedicated Server in the USA and on stallturn when it is running the VNAO mod (it occasionally runs the EFA mod too).
