Rant6 Posted August 16, 2010 Posted August 16, 2010 This weekend I discovered that I had everything necessary to run nVidia 3d in "poor man's mode". That is, with only the software driver and a set of blue/red glasses. The end result is not quite as good as using shutter glasses and a 120Hz monitor, but still, it works very well, and the price is right (about $2 for a set of blue/red glasses). The biggest problem is that the colors are very muted. I went through all of my games to find out how things looked. I have not flown DCS BS in a year, but when I entered the cockpit, I was blown away. I've never seen anything like it. Every needle, dial, switch, etc. stood out in full 3d. (I aslo use Track-ir.) The cockpit was clearer and more useable than anything that I have ever seen, and the experience when flying was simply unbelievable. Every switch lable was clearly readable, and the hud suspended in the hud glass was just way too cool. Looks like I'm back flying again.

topdog Posted August 16, 2010 Posted August 16, 2010 I did wonder how well such a setup could work whilst also using TrackIR, I thought they'd more than likely be mutually exclusive devices. Especially the advances in 3D that are going glass-less anyway, since they are depending on being able to project different screens to different eyeballs so angles and distance between eyes is important. We'll have to see, ultimately if I'm still alive in the future to be able to choose between full 3d holographic cockpit or a jack in the head, I'll probably volunteer for the jack. That's what I'm holding on for :) [ i7 2600k 4.6GHz :: 16GB Mushkin Blackline LV :: EVGA GTX 1080ti 11GB ] [ TM Warthog / Saitek Rudder :: Oculus Rift :: Obutto cockpit :: Acer HN274H 27" 120Hz :: 3D Vision Ready ]

Lio Posted August 16, 2010 Posted August 16, 2010 Topdog TIR and 3D are not mutual exclusive. 3D projects two images on the screen slightly offset from each other. One uses a red tone another a green. The filtering is done with the glasses having green and red lenses so that one lense absorbs the other picture etc. TrackIR works completly independendt of that and simply decides what to show on the screen.

bfeld Posted August 17, 2010 Posted August 17, 2010 Hi, Rant6, your post (it was more a reminder for me :) ) made me ordering anaglyph stereo glasses today and I'm really looking forward to it. I was always fascinated by one particular scene in the movie Avatar: When the camera was located inside these military helos, there was a very clear but limited 3D space -- the cockpit. And then, outside and just seperated by the windows, there was the depth of Pandoras landscape. Bye, Torsten
airea Posted August 17, 2010 Posted August 17, 2010 Take a look at my post... http://forums.eagle.ru/showthread.php?t=40988

For anaglyphic filtering yes, but this isn't what I'm interested in as I mentioned - wouldn't consider it at all for home movies/games in fact. I don't even want to use polarised glasses, and in reviews these have suffered from head movements, angles, distance from the screen, though that may also be an individual thing. They don't compare to 3D glasses in theatres, these tend to do better. 3D without glasses I've actually yet to see for myself, but it seems to be important to position (and angle) yourself to be within specific 'zones' targetted by the 3D projectors, and as such, may not be all that compatible with head track motion for the near future.
