Normally, I would expect the R-27ET to be the weapon of choice for a silent kill. So I setup a mission where I chase a Mig-23 from long distance.

I have my radar turned of and the EOS on. The problem is, that once I am able to lock the Mig-23 with the EOS (I guess some 15 miles or so from target), you can clearly see the Mig starting evasive manoevres (no you can't, of course, I use external views for this :=). More so, when I fire the R-27ET, you see that immediately the AI Mig-23 starts dispensing flares.

Now, how the hell did the AI Mig spot me in the first place? by looking in the mirrors? And second, How did it obtain a launch warning from a passively homed IR missile launched from its back at more than 10 miles away?

This way, the possible advantage of the R-27ET is totally lost; on the contrary, I could have locked & launched an R-27ER from greater distance.

Am I doing something wrong?

Check that the radar hasn't come on anyway. Isn't it the case that if the EOS losses an optical lock it will switch on the radar to maintain the lock ? If you're hitting "lock", "lock" repeatedly at maximum range range for the EOS maybe you got the lock optically, then lost it & had the radar come on... Go in to 10km before you get your lock, watch to check the radar doesn't come on & see if he still dodges.

Cheers.
