Pilotasso Posted October 19, 2010 Posted October 19, 2010 Made this separate thread to post for those who are considering buying an SDD. The tests, both with the old HDD and the SSD were done after a clean OS install (WIN7 64)+Spyware doctor+CH manager+Logitech manager (G940). Thats on the Western digital and theOCZ vertex 2. I have not tried the same for the Samsung (only synthetic benches) hence the lack of program loading times at the bottom of this review for that drive. Here are the results, firstly Western digital 400MB RAID EDITION, Secondly Sansung F3 1TB and finaly the SDD thirdly: HTUNE PRO This was a standard drive 4 years ago This makes the modern hard drives twice as fast nowadays. A whopping 4X increase over my original drive and twice as much as standard modern HDD's today. DCS A-10C Settings: GUI entry: Western digital 400MB RAID EDITION=13s OCZ vertex 2=9s Mission loading time (First instant action Georgia) Western digital 400MB RAID EDITION=1min, 55s OCZ vertex 2=1min, 9s NOTE: There are alot of disk idle times while loading so the difference is less pronounced here. Windows load at button start: Western digital 400MB RAID EDITION=1min, 5s OCZ vertex 2=44s It has to be said that BIOS posting takes about 21 seconds so the actual drive loading times are 45s for the HDD and 23s for the OCZ vertex 2, thats 50% reduction right there. In the end Im very happy, not only because my loading times have been reduced but because its so easy to multi task now. The numbers do not show the full story: While HDD read/write sequentially making multiple program openings a pain in the back side, SDD's can do it all the same time with no waiting times as long as it has bandwidth remaining. This is a huge advantage. For game play alot less stuttering, but I need more time to fully assess the differences in game play. 1 .
Kuky Posted October 20, 2010 Posted October 20, 2010 Well people should understand that loading times do matter if you open/close things lot of times... some might say ah who cares if it takes me 55sec and you can do it in 30sec.. it's only 25sec difference... haven't I heard this one many times, right? Thanks for the review Pilotaso, numbers from benchmarks and especially of real life tasking are what show a true picture and seem about what I was expecting (as I got same SSD). PC specs: Windows 11 Home | Asus TUF Gaming B850-Plus WiFi | AMD Ryzen 7 9800X3D + LC 360 AIO | MSI RTX 5090 LC 360 AIO | 55" Samsung Odyssey Gen 2 | 64GB PC5-48000 DDR5 | 1TB M2 SSD for OS | 2TB M2 SSD for DCS | NZXT C1000 Gold ATX 3.1 1000W | TM Cougar Throttle, Floor Mounted MongoosT-50 Grip on TM Cougar board, MFG Crosswind, Track IR
bumfire Posted October 20, 2010 Posted October 20, 2010 Loading times are critical if you ask me, nothign worse in havign to wait for the OS boot or for a program to load. These things are the best upgrade a user can make to their computer if they already have a decent cpu and video card, after years and years of mechanical drives, these things bring new life to your OS, everything goes from ok'ish speeds, to crazy fast speeds when you swap over a mechanical hdd for a ssd. I am glad you like your new vertex Pilotasso, just remember to keep it in good condition, trim and garbage control isnt great, so you are best to use one of the many app's out there that will reset the nand blocks. I use AS Cleaner with FF box ticked, which resets the empty cells to new, if I am installing my OS again, I use HDDErase which resets the drives to the state they were when brand new. This is my hd tune graph for writes, you gotta love these things :)

Well written and very infomative. ^^ Thats what im really interested in though ^^ [sIGPIC][/sIGPIC] 64th "Scorpions" Aggressor Squadron Discord: 64th Aggressor Squadron TS: 195.201.110.22
Pilotasso Posted October 21, 2010 Author Posted October 21, 2010 Oh man I dont think i will ever go back to conventional hard drives again. They look as obsolete to SDD as coal locomotives are to computers. Played LOMAC today online, not even a hiccup. Its almost like playing on a large RAMDISK. Will continue to report as i play other tittles. .
