Jetfire Posted May 23, 2005 Posted May 23, 2005 Does anyone else get this? When I try to join Dreyou's server, I usually get a blue screen (the "blue screen of death") when the mission finally loads and at that point my computer locks up. But, very rarely, it works fine, no computer freezing, and this only seems to happen if there's only 1 or 2 players in the game. I only have 512 megs of ram. My harddrive is partitioned, so I have 4096 megs for swap on one drive. Since it looks like Lockon uses the most memory when loading a mission, I tried putting a gig of swap on another drive, but I still get the blue screen. My video card is an ati 9600 (base model). I usually get 20-25 fps on the runway, about 35 - 45 fps everywhere else.
KuostA Posted May 24, 2005 Posted May 24, 2005 Well, what does the BSOD say? ..Unless you're talking about the renown Lomac BSOD?
Kula66 Posted May 24, 2005 Posted May 24, 2005 You don't need all that swap file ... you are just wasting disk space! You have 5Gb of VM available ... unless you have some mega apps you don't need it ... it has nothing to do with your problem! Set your system up for mini-dumps and post it ... the crash code will (may) allow someone to tell you what is running when it crashes. James
Jetfire Posted May 25, 2005 Author Posted May 25, 2005 Well, this BSOD didn't show any info Kuosta, just was the dark blue BSOD color. Kula, can you point me in a direction (explanation or website) on how to setup these mini dumps?
Kula66 Posted May 26, 2005 Posted May 26, 2005 Right click 'My computer', select properties, select 'Advanced' tab, select 'Startup and recovery - settings' button. On the write debugging info drop down select 'Small memory dump' .... and note the directory below. When your system crashes it will write a small dump file in there ... When you say there is NOTHING on the blue screen - you 'should' see loads of info in white ... I think the top few lines are of value, the rest just stack.
Jetfire Posted May 30, 2005 Author Posted May 30, 2005 Sorry Kula, just got back to this now. Thanks for the info, will try that.
Kula66 Posted May 30, 2005 Posted May 30, 2005 A link for trying to figure out why it crashed - http://aumha.org/win5/kbestop.php. Be aware, it is not always an easy task ... sometimes you never get to the bottom of it :)
Jetfire Posted May 31, 2005 Author Posted May 31, 2005 Ok, finally, some info, Kula66, I did what you said, funny thing is, my blue screen finally showed the info. Error: 0x8e driver file: vsdatant.sys I googled it, found out Zone Alarm has some issues with XP (bad hooks or something). So, now I'm looking for an alternate firewall. Kula, or anyone, have any suggestions?
169th_Dredd Posted May 31, 2005 Posted May 31, 2005 ZoneAlarm sucks, period. try out Kerio Personal Firewall(still operates after trial period, just removes a couple of functions), or sygate Personal Firewall. Never had any issues with Kerio whilst flying online. Gotta hate those BSOD's! The only BSOD Ive had on this computer was with LockOn, which spat the dummy on kmixer.sys. Ended up downclocking my memory, never seen the problem since. ---= 169th Panthers -Flt Lt.- =--- http://www.169thpanthers.com.au AMD64 S939 3700 | 2GB Corsair DDR500 | 21" CRT ATI Radeon X800Pro | 2x36GB WD Raptors | SB Audigy TIR3 | TM-868 | X52 | CH Pedals | Creative 5.1 Spkrs
Jetfire Posted June 1, 2005 Author Posted June 1, 2005 Copy, thanks for the info. Yeah I'm testing out Sygate PF atm, it looks good so far.
Jetfire Posted June 6, 2005 Author Posted June 6, 2005 Just a follow up: Zone Alarm was causing this BSOD. I removed Zone Alarm, tested both Sygate and Kerio, and I never saw the BSOD again. Thanks for the help gents.
