Crazyowl Posted November 18, 2010 Posted November 18, 2010 Can Anyone put a link to the GTX 460? When I look at tiger direct and compusa there are like 8 GPU named GTX 460 with different brand is there no different or is there a GTX 460 better than the other or it dosent matter? Thanks
Cali Posted November 18, 2010 Posted November 18, 2010 (edited) Look here http://www.newegg.com/Product/ProductList.aspx?Submit=ENE&IsNodeId=1&Description=460%201gb&bop=And&SrchInDesc=gtx%20460&Page=1&PageSize=20 Read reviews and compare that card with other cards. I, myself would get the 5870, that's what I'm looking at getting if and when I build. It runs about $150-200 more, but it's better and has Eyefinity if you ever go that route. As you can see...I'm well overdue for a new system. Rusty_M Posted November 18, 2010 Posted November 18, 2010 One additional point to waiting for the release of Sandy Bridge is this: you might see the older components lose a couple price points as a result. When I purchased my current system the i7-920 had been released for a month or so and the C2D's had definitely gotten a bit cheaper compared with where they were when I first started designing the system a few months before that. But that said, I am fairly disappointed in Intel - when Sandy bridge releases they'll have four actively selling socket types in the consumer desktop market alone. That's just waaaay too much and actually got me to start looking at AM3 for a new purchase, but for my intended price points and applications the added hazzle of traversing the djungle of different sockets and chipsets is sort of worth it. But only barely. It seems that they don't want anyone to upgrade CPU without upgrading the Mobo too. I wonder how much more the i7 950 can come down in price after its huge recent drop, and prices are still gradually falling. I wouldn't be surprised if that particular CPU doesn't drop hugely in price, but maybe the 960/975 will come down to join it. The world is going mad. Me? I'm doing fine! http://www.twitch.tv/rusty_the_robot https://www.youtube.com/user/RustyRobotGaming

They done that in the past and when AMD kicked them in the groin they lost a lot of consumers tired to switch of mobo. EtherealN Posted November 18, 2010 Posted November 18, 2010 It seems that they don't want anyone to upgrade CPU without upgrading the Mobo too. Never assume malice for what can be adequately explained through incompetence. :) I think they've just had some issues integrating their various design shops. For example, they started with releasing the 1366 socket, but later they managed to squeeze in the PCIe controller as well on the chip - and then the 1366 socket doesn't have the infrastructure for that, so they needed a new one and 1156 saw the light of day. Then the israeli division started getting ready with the Sandy Bridge silicon that they have been doing some radical stuff with and suddenly they had the same situation yet again. So yeah, I think it's just an issue of featuritis and poor planning, though the effect certainly is that upgrades without mobo change becomes problematic - unless you bought an 1156 system with an i3 or something, since then you can easily turn your budget machine to a powerhouse through a simple swap to an i7-870. Rusty_M Posted November 18, 2010 Posted November 18, 2010 I always thought 1366 was better/more advanced than 1156. Was I wrong there? The world is going mad. Me? I'm doing fine! http://www.twitch.tv/rusty_the_robot https://www.youtube.com/user/RustyRobotGaming
EtherealN Posted November 18, 2010 Posted November 18, 2010 Ouf, hard to say to be honest. This is all from somewhat sketchy memory so add a pinch of salt, but I believe the 1366 does have higher bandwidth allowances, so it is better for the truly high-end systems. The 1156 on the other hand is a much simpler design due to having the PCIe controller moved to the processor itself, but with those controllers being only 16-lanes they aren't as qualified for things like SLI or CrossFire (you'd basically get limited to running both on 8 channels, whereas most 1366 mobos won't have any issue running two cards with 16 lanes each). But even there there are exceptions - some of ASUS ROG motherboards for the 1156 chipset does have a PCIe controller and thus "give back" that full SLI/CrossFire capability, but I don't know how exactly that works and if there are any significant tradeoffs. I think you could probably say that 1366 is "better/more advanced" for raw performance while the 1156 is "better/more advanced" for the specific purpose of simplicity/value.
