I had the same issue, it also said device detection error, also under W7 64 Ultimate.

However, when I uninstalled, unplugged, then reinstalled in vista comp. mode (I think I picked SP 1 instead of 2) as admin it installed fine. Before that, I already had it working with TARGET so you might try that. The only problem is that you cant use your old profiles (as far as I know) so thats why I persisted on getting foxy and the control panel to run.

I'll try that out and see if it works for me also.....hope so.

@Kuky, I'll double check and make sure they are updated.

Can you post your current "complete" hardware setup?

On the USB thing, just a thought, have you tried with only the Cougar attached and nothing else?

You want the Dxdiag or want me to just name stuff off? Yes I tried with only the cougar, mouse and keyboard connected on a new install.

Now that I think of it, I think I also needed to manually remove the cougar from the device list before doing the reinstall in vista comp. mode. Because win7 installs something for it that is not correct and it conflicts with the real drivers.

No, not DXDiag because that's not always complete (it doesnt' have my TrackIR listed, it still says i have an active page file which is actually disabled etc...).

I was thinking about your hardware list. I was thinking on doing a little search on possible conflicting stuff.

Do you have the option to try it under XP (with the 32-bit drivers)?

Did it work before under XP?

Now i must say that at a given point i had the same problem under XP (even a few times). Always the "device detection error... E2: Ensure that the device is connected and working properly."

If you can't get it recognised you start doing a lot of things to make it recognisable like reflashing (which isn't needed). The only way to get out of this was to replug the device into another USB port (multiple times) until my system eventualy picked it up. From then on the problems where gone. That's why i asked to test without anything else attached (on the USB ports).

Question: If you unplug/plug it, does Windows come with the device disconnected/connected sounds/message?

Lange, I had a cougar working under XP about 3 years ago, but sold it. I have a XP CD, but don’t plan on installing it, since I won’t be using XP ever again. I’m going to try to install it under Vista SP1 and see if that works. I did unplug and plug it back in into different USB ports and got the same thing. I did get the disconnected/connected sounds/messages but then it would give me the "device detection error... E2: Ensure that the device is connected and working properly." error.I also tried unplugging itand plugging it back in numerous times. I’m going to a Rugg’s house this weekend and I’m taking it with me and try to install it on his computer. If it works on his I will be reformatting to Windows 7 premium 64-bit instead of having Windows 7 ultimate 64-bit. Me and Kuky tried a few things the other night to get it to work, after about an 1-1/2 we gave up. I said I’ll wait til I built a new computer. But other things have came up that I can try, so I’m going to do that. I really don’t want to do another reformat, but I want to get it working.

Tried to install it on Rugg's computer with XP 32-bit and Windows 7 64-bit, it wouldn't install on his either. So, I'm going to take it back and exchange it or get my money back. That's 2 that are doing the same exact thing. This is on all different versions of Windows have tried XP 32-bit, Vista 32-bit, Windows 7 premium 64-bit and W7 ultimate 64-bit and nothing.

Well, lets see if 3rd time is a charm, exchanged the cougar and got another one. If this doesn't work I'll have to contact TM about getting my money back or sale it. Fry's discontinued the cougar, so I can't take it back there or get my money back. I had a heard enough time getting the one I have.

I come to realize that TM and the cougar hate me! 3 different cougars and none of them will install on any computer I try them on.

You can be sure that it's not a Cougar problem then.

Yep. it's going back in the box until I get a new computer or maybe try a powered USB hub.

A powered hub should make no difference. In fact, it could lead to even more problems. I had 2 already and both went bananas after a short while. I have everything back attached to the motherboard directly. The only one which realy worked will was the one on my previous monitor.

Well then, I have no idea why 3 cougars wouldn't install. I talked to Kuky and we went through the install procedure and even took it to Rugg's house to try it there. Like I said TM and the cougar hate me.

If anybody else is still having this problem I think I might have figured out the solution. The key for everything to work is having the firmware in the controller already flashed BEFORE you plug it into windows7 x64. I myself had to use another PC with windows XP 32bit just to flash it, and btw, at first it didn't work in XP 32bit AT ALL either, but it did allow me run the HOTAS cougar update, and then it magically seemed to come alive. After that i just plugged it into the win7 machine and it seems so far to be working perfectly.

I already sold my cougar, maybe I'll get the new warthog sometime in the future.

I did it again......bought another Cougar, but this time I won't sale it and I'm keeping my CH stuff until I get the Cougar up and running like I want. It's a modded Uber Cougar. I don't think I'm gonna go with a force sensing one cause I like to have movement in it, but you never know what I'm gonna do. Sometimes I think I'm crazy, cause I was thinking of buying a WH when I get back.

Cali, I'm telling you straight-

Properly tuned, the FSSB is the s*. There is nothing more precise, except possibly an extention-fitted WH. The biggest mistake I've ever made gaming hardware was selling mine years ago.

I actually returned the WH I bought a month back, since I got fed up with flying the F-15 without radar elevation in the place God intended it (along with the nubby designator- the least TM could have done was bring the same method from the Cougar along for the ride). I've had a Suncom SFS pair sitting in my closet for a while, and grabbed a bunch of Leo Bodnar hardware (including their new 8-way plus-push button hats) with the intent of converting it over to a Hall setup; I've also been scoring a bunch of Otto/etc. switches to convert it over to the correct gear, as the original hardware was non-momentary on the boat and hat, although the former is going away for the proper push button.

I figure I'll polish the whole thing up, and weigh the grip with a bunch of lead like that guy on the X-plane forums years back.

But if an actually reasonably priced Cougar comes up on the 'Bay, and I have $400 sitting around with nothing better to do, you can bet I'm giving RS a call and getting another FSSB unit.

Not 100% sure what direction I'm gonna go with yet as far modding it goes.

@Lange, no I haven't tried it yet and won't be able to for about 3 more months. I'll try it first and see how I like it.
