Tactic and Survival

Hi Guys,

 

So i got to the stage when i am comfortable flying the planes and using the majority of weapons in training but now i have a big problem.

 

I am having less than a 10% survival rate in single missions and campaign missions. For example i flew overwatch last night using rockets and unguided bombs but am getting hammered all the time even by infantry, let alone mig29s and sa-8s

 

I'm even reading old books on A10 such as Modern Flighting Aircraft by Salamander books but all the tactics are more suitable to a cold war type russian tanks rolling across germany scenario

 

It seems like i have the tools to do the job but not trhe techniques. Does anybody have any advice how to stay alive?

You need a "package" of supporting aircraft like in the RW. SEAD flights, CAP.

If ED was so kind to model the A-10C why fly it like the A-10A?

I will try creating some of my own missions with a bit more backup on my side then. Then i can just watch them and still claim my medals.

Using the GAU though is so much more tempting tho and thats why they bite back. Also i can't seem to find infantry etc especially if their hiding in woods (even with labels on). I'll try using the flir in different heat modes too. thanks

You're flying too low obviously. Setting your CMS to AUTO should protect you from the MiGs as long as you put a little maneuvering effort into it. Some of the better equipped planes (for A2A) should be able to help you out there as well.

SA-8 can best be avoided by terrain masking. The systems needs about a minute to achieve a valid lock and open fire, which should give you enough time to hop from cover to cover.

 

Never overfly your target, use the gun from the distance and break away.

 

If you are operating at low level, stick to Mavericks and the gun. Bombs will get you killed because they do not provide enough stand-off distance.

Yeah... when Bad Guy aircraft (predatory) in the area I always regress back towards good guys and my CMS has been pretty good. BUT far too often I get PUNKed by SAM and AD... tonight even at 11,000 ft... without even knowing I am threatened.

11000' is too low. 15000' gets you above anything that it's an SA-6,8,10,11,15.

the main problem i have is with enemy fighters... but i did have a rather amusing flight a few nights ago, on the first mission in the second campaign. i hit the bridge as intended, then made the descision to attrite the enemy artillery near that position after taking care of some of the air defences. this accomplished, i made a turn over the sea, gained some height and headed back to base. no sooner had i done this, then rwr starts warning of a mig behind me with lock, so i engaged ecm and started to dump chaff and lose height. i realised he was closer than i thought so started madly dropping flares. after 30 seconds or so the missile warning went off and the aircraft yawed violently, fire in left engine, and a glance back showed that half the tail was missing. i extinguished the fire and tried to restart the engine, but it was dead. bizzarely enough, the mig seemed to have disappeared, so i make a very very sketchy landing and quit to check what hit me, expecting it to be the ir missiles from the mig. turns out an f-18 had fired a sparrow at the mig, which missed and hit me xD. this game surprises me every time, i love it.

But really... I gotta figure out how to spot (or at least have some SA) these ground threats.
