Is it possible to use the following when flying a AI mission no players involved:

#1 Smoke marker

#2 Smoke Marker on unit

#3 Signal flare

#4 Signal flare on unit.

I dont fly a lot but I do make a lot of nissions and campaigns for my own enjoyment.

Thanks for any help :pilotfly:

I haven't tried this but you should be able to add a trigger zone, then set it up that once you enter or the ai enters that trigger zone, you have the unit perform an action such as drop a signal flare or smoke marker on or not on a specified unit. I've done it for myself in practice runs where i have a trigger set off a certain colored smoke to mark targerts etc...

In short, use triggers.... that should do it.

Another option though is that you can select the waypoint for that AI aircraft or unit, and in the advanced tab add a perform task command for that waypoint with start and stop conditions to perform a task, but i think the options are limited to things like fire at spot ( not sure if you can get more specific )

Yeah that should work, but there are hundreds of ways of combining triggers to perform those actions, you'll learn quicker by trial and error. I'm no expert, but it did become intuitive after a little messing around.

Also you should have a look at the triggers in some of the supplied missions to get an idea of what is possible

Edit:- I don't think much of the signal flares if you are trying to spot targets from the air, smoke is much better to mark stuff with, it is way more visible.

I tried using Signal Flares by setting up a trigger zone that when my aircraft entered the zone the signal flare would fire. I was unable to get the flare to only fire once, but I could trigger them by using the Continous Trigger Event. Should I be able to use just the Once Trigger Event so I can get only one flare to fire from the ground instead of continuously firing? Also, I notice that the Blue flares don't seem to work, but the other colors do.

hmm..interesting, I thought by default they fired once..

Tyger has used Signal Flares a lot in his mission series, I expect he could probably steer you right

Triggering them once definitely should work fine. Are you sure they didn't trigger? As Nate says, they're pretty difficult to spot from the air, even when you're expecting them and know where to look. Triggering them continuously would certainly make them quite a bit more noticable, but it's not very realistic.

Edit: confirmed the blue flares don't seem to be visible, by the way.

Edit: sample mission attached. Four smoke markers are triggered at mission start; a single red flare will be activated in the middle of the markers after you fly forward a bit (unit in zone trigger). Another red flare will be triggered if you fly below 350 meters or so. You'll get a message both times to confirm you've activated the trigger.

Initially I put the trigger position about 10km out but the flare was barely visible, even when I did see it. So, the starting position is pretty close, and you can trigger the altitude-based one even closer.

I think in most cases it's unreasonable to expect the player to be able to spot the flare, unless they're already looking exactly where it will be... which kind of removes the need for a signal flare in the first place.

I've also added a radio trigger that will emit a flare every 10 seconds until you tell it to stop (with another radio trigger), in case you'd like to see one method of implementing a repeating flare.
