Conure Posted February 7, 2011 Posted February 7, 2011 hey guys, recently considered getting FSX but decided it's a little too much hastle with all the addons etc. Is x-plane 9 good in your opinions? Does it have nice cockpits etc? Good FM? If I buy it online can I just torrent it and use my details, rather than waiting on the CDs? cheers! RogueRunner Posted February 7, 2011 Posted February 7, 2011 If you do decide on XP wait for 10. All the 10 version updates will be free then. XP is an acquired taste however. Some people hate it, others love it again. Download the demo and take it for a spin before you decide!!!! With the price of ammunition these days do not expect a warning shot.
Yskonyn Posted February 7, 2011 Posted February 7, 2011 X-plane always provided a love/hate relationship for me. Flightmodel is very nice, as is the performance. However the cockpits, even those of most paid addons, are horrible. It's great for the flying experience, not so much for the technical, procedural experience; would be my very short version. 1 [sIGPIC][/sIGPIC] Asus Z390-E, 32GB Crucial Ballistix 2400Mhz, Intel i7 9700K 5.0Ghz, Asus GTX1080 8GB, SoundBlaster AE-5, G15, Streamdeck, DSD Flight, TM Warthog, VirPil BRD, MFG Crosswind CAM5, TrackIR 5, KW-908 Jetseat, Win 10 64-bit ”Pilots do not get paid for what they do daily, but they get paid for what they are capable of doing. Conure Posted February 7, 2011 Author Posted February 7, 2011 Hmm, bad cockpits? Damn, wish I could get a civilian flight sim that either the creators havent abandoned or doesn't have poor quality details! I just want to simulate 12 hours of monotony on my days off! Agg Posted February 7, 2011 Posted February 7, 2011 If you're trying to decide between FSX and XP I would say go with FSX. If you are curious about XP then download the demo, that's what I should have done... I bought XP9 and I really cant stand it, but then again some people love it. X-Plane looks very dated, and you wont get the systems simulation that you may want when you buy a civilian flight sim. Have they removed the looping ATC-chatter by the way?
Yskonyn Posted February 7, 2011 Posted February 7, 2011 No they haven't, Agg. But you can shut it up, though. :) Anyway I would say FSX is a better choice too. Its far more rounded out and there are quite a few REALLY nice addons available. The stock aircraft are useless, except the general aviation ones. The jetliners and the helo's have bad, bad cockpits out of the box. But there are (free) addons available for many aircraft with decent enough panels. Something XP lacks. I am waiting for the PMDG 737NX myself, as this is the aircraft I fly in real life and from what I have seen (and know from the previous version) this is going to be very high fidelity and will make a great procedural trainer for me. Also the weather effects in FSX are more realistic than XP's, especially with the Real Environment addon. I personally think there is more fun to be had in FSX. effte Posted February 7, 2011 Posted February 7, 2011 (edited) Got FS2004, FSX and XP9. Sticking with FS2004 both for instrument and visual flying... and yes, I do fly in real life. The biggest problem of FS2004 is the lack of terrain detail for visual navigation. That can be solved by add-ons. FSX looks nicer, by far, but introduces problems I'm not prepared to deal with (light aircraft airframe/icing which is completely separated from reality and an awful TrackIR implementation being the two worst IMO). I have yet to see fixes for these issues with FSX, so I'm in still in FS2004 land. The flight modelling is somewhat better in FSX, so for aerobatics that's the way to go. As long as you're staying well away from the edges of the envelope, FS2004 is doing a great job though. You can forget about the default aircraft for all three simulators. Add-ons is a must. Edit: Yskonyn, I do not know what you are putting in your coffee, but if it makes you think the default GA aircraft in FS are acceptable, I want some of it! ;) Cheers, Fred Edited February 7, 2011 by effte ----- Introduction to UTM/MGRS - Trying to get your head around what trim is, how it works and how to use it? - DCS helos vs the real world.

I'll still go for FSX then. Yskonyn, something I've wanted to ask a real airline pilot for a while is, do you get pleasure out of sims or does flying in real life take all the fun out? I mean, do you just sim for training? How can it be fun to simulate on a PC when you can do it in real life?? thanks Con Intel i7 6700k, Asus GTX1070, 16gb DDR4 @ 3200mhz, CH Fighterstick, CH Pro Throttle, CH Pro Rudder Pedals, Samsung Evo 850 SSD @ 500GB * 2, TrackIR 5 and 27" monitor running at 2560 * 1440, Windows 10.
Yskonyn Posted February 7, 2011 Posted February 7, 2011 Yskonyn, something I've wanted to ask a real airline pilot for a while is, do you get pleasure out of sims or does flying in real life take all the fun out? I mean, do you just sim for training? How can it be fun to simulate on a PC when you can do it in real life?? Con Before I started flight academy (combat)flightsimming was a hobby of mine. I flew with VATSIM and whatnot, because I always knew I wanted to become a pilot and this was a great way of escapism for me waiting until the day came I could start. Now that I am in the pit on a daily basis I hardly ever fire up MSFS anymore. Why would I go over all the stuff again when I already had a days work for real? ;) Like many things flying for a living becomes normal and I rather spend my free time doing something else. That is, something else than flying from A to B with virtual pax. I do, however, still enjoy doing virtual flights in a different way. Usually the wacko stuff, like touch and go's on an aircraft carrier with an airliner, or aerobatics, see how much crosswind I can take, world renown diffcult approaches we don't visit in our real life operation (we do come to many cool little airports in RL as well! Much hands on flying.). And of course the combatsims like DCS, BoB2 and IL-2. Oh and I very much like the 'Adventures' in MSFS or whatever they are called now. Sometimes not very realistic, but fun nonetheless. Also, I do use MSFS as a procedural trainer to keep my holding pattern interceptions and beacon interception procedures up to snuff. It's great for that with a good addon aircraft/cockpit which has instruments with a high update rate. Then it's more about the mental picture and I disable/obstruct any outside views. Instruments only. Lastly, you do become much more aware of 'what isn't there' in sims, once you fly for real, but no, it does not take out (all) the fun for me. :joystick:  I do focus more on combat sims now. Yskonyn, I do not know what you are putting in your coffee, but if it makes you think the default GA aircraft in FS are acceptable, I want some of it! Well, I was talking about the Cessna's. :) They are kinda ok. Although their speeds and wind susceptability are way off. Ok.. I see your point. ;) Let's call them 'fun' then. Which doesn't hold true for the stock jetliners. :D [sIGPIC][/sIGPIC] Asus Z390-E, 32GB Crucial Ballistix 2400Mhz, Intel i7 9700K 5.0Ghz, Asus GTX1080 8GB, SoundBlaster AE-5, G15, Streamdeck, DSD Flight, TM Warthog, VirPil BRD, MFG Crosswind CAM5, TrackIR 5, KW-908 Jetseat, Win 10 64-bit ”Pilots do not get paid for what they do daily, but they get paid for what they are capable of doing. effte Posted February 7, 2011 Posted February 7, 2011 I was talking about the Cessnas as well (and the others), and they're a bloody joke in FS9 and FSX alike. :) ----- Introduction to UTM/MGRS - Trying to get your head around what trim is, how it works and how to use it? - DCS helos vs the real world.

effte Posted February 7, 2011 Posted February 7, 2011 You are talking about the FSX cessna's etc I take it? :P Yes, FSX and FS9. Oh my. Yskonyn got it right. Their speeds are off and their reaction to wind, any wind, including that generated by actually flying, is all wrong. Oh, the instrumentation is off, the cockpits are bad and the engines and system do not behave like in real life either. That aside, they're half decent I'd say... ;) ----- Introduction to UTM/MGRS - Trying to get your head around what trim is, how it works and how to use it? - DCS helos vs the real world.
MTFDarkEagle Posted February 7, 2011 Posted February 7, 2011 I agree :) That's why I only fly payware (i.e. decent) aircraft in fsx, not that default bullcr*p :P Lukas - "TIN TIN" - 9th Shrek Air Strike Squadron TIN TIN's Cockpit thread
Yskonyn Posted February 7, 2011 Posted February 7, 2011 Well, at least the stock Cessna panel is readable and resembles at least some form of real life panel, unlike the jets. ;) [sIGPIC][/sIGPIC] Asus Z390-E, 32GB Crucial Ballistix 2400Mhz, Intel i7 9700K 5.0Ghz, Asus GTX1080 8GB, SoundBlaster AE-5, G15, Streamdeck, DSD Flight, TM Warthog, VirPil BRD, MFG Crosswind CAM5, TrackIR 5, KW-908 Jetseat, Win 10 64-bit ”Pilots do not get paid for what they do daily, but they get paid for what they are capable of doing. effte Posted February 8, 2011 Posted February 8, 2011 True, true... bit harder to mess up an ASI and a whisky compass than an entire glass cockpit I guess. When you compare e g the Flight1 steam gauges to the MS supplied ones, you realise they really did go a long way towards still getting it wrong though! ;) Have you had a chance to play around with Aerowinx PS1.3? Now, that's simulation... even if PMDG are getting close. Now there seems to be a PSX in the works. Two weeks, be sure. Gotta have that one. ----- Introduction to UTM/MGRS - Trying to get your head around what trim is, how it works and how to use it? - DCS helos vs the real world.
Yskonyn Posted February 8, 2011 Posted February 8, 2011 Yes I have a copy of PS1.3 on the shelf right here. It's very nice indeed, but I don't think I am going for the PSX version.
