Hey guys and gals,

I saw today that newegg has the new 1155 socket i7's and i5's.

Is it just me or does a $209 core i5 at 3.3Ghz (turbo 3.7Ghz) Seem REALLY, REALLY cheap?

Even the i7 2600k at $330 (3.4Ghz and 3.8GHz turbo) seems like a great deal.

When do you think the 1155 motherboards will be showing up again?

Also, the 2600 and 2600k, what's the $20 difference for? Same goes with the 2500 and 2500k.

I might have to jump on these I won't lie. Thoughts?? :geek:

The K-version SKU's have, as sofie indicated, unlocked multipliers. Really no reason not to go for them, IMO.

I suspect that the 2500 will give you roughly the same performance in DCS as the 2600, but since I only have the latter I haven't been able to compare.

@EtherealN

I've always built myself mid-range systems. My Q6600 is doing okay for the moment but I definitely have to play with my settings to get it to run the way I want. I would LOVE to just max everything out for once with a flight sim.

My thoughts were that the 2500 would be a considerable upgrade from my current setup at a very* reasonable price. You are happy with the 2600k I'm assuming?

Extremely happy with it.

DCS: A-10C runs with all settings high (mirrors on) except medium view distance, no TSAA and "only" 4x MSAA, in windowed mode (Windows Aero active) with only very very sporadic dips below 60FPS even in combat - and that's while I have HD video playing on the other screen. Still a slight stutter when I activate TGP (1024 res on it), but otherwise fine.

Also, note that the K-series SKU's not only give you the unlocked multi, they also give you complete control over the TurboBoost features. So even if you don't want a traditional overclock, you can for example allow it to TurboBoost all cores to 3.8GHz - which it otherwise only does if only a single core is loaded. (With all cores loaded TurboBoost as standard only goes one "tick" up - to 3.5GHz.)

Going from my 4GHz e8500/9800GTX+ to the 2600K/GTX560Ti was night and day. Completely changed the experience. Can't even compare them.

See that is.. Insane to me. I couldn't imagine a constant 60+ fps. And for the $330 it's not THAT much of a leap either.

I don't know if this is asking too much but how much was your setup without the video card?

CPU, MoBo, RAM, Power Supply, Case.

Oh wow, giving you my price wouldn't be helpful to you - the exchange rate to US dollars is wonky right now so it would probably end up at like twice the PPP price that I actually paid.

Going on prices I find on the net instead:

CPU: i7-2600K: 330

Mobo: Sabertooth P67: ~180 (not currently on the market as far as I can see, due to the Cougar Point issue)

RAM: 2x4 Corsair Vengeance: 105

PSU: Corsair AX 850W PSU: 170

Chassis: Cooler Master HAF 932: 120

So ~905 dollars. I re-used my old chassis though, and I'd probably recommend either a different chassis that has dust filters if you are going with air cooling (I use water), or that you ensure you have compressed-air options to use once a month or so. I have cats, so lots of dust and fur around and gets easily sucked into that chassis (it has rediculous cooling capacity). If you don't like loud computers, you'd also probably want a different chassis, since this chassis is only about one thing: air flow. There are practically zero measures taken to reduce noice except such that have absolutely zero impact on airflow.

Also, do get an aftermarket cooler. The processor is actually pretty cool and you'll do fine with the standard one, but a 20-30 dollar aftermarket one is still preferable.

Also, with that specific motherboard, you may want to add a 50x50x10mm fan to mount on the circuit board cover. Another option is the ASUS P67 Pro board - roughly the same price.

EDIT: Hahah, yeah, I was right about currency conversion. Doing a conversion of what I -actually- paid in my own currency ends up at 1407 dollars instead of 905. I should have bought it from the US and just lived with the longer shipping times. The heck have you guys done to your currency? :P

EDIT2: Oh, and make sure to doublecheck RAM choices. I have an issue right now where my RAM isn't behaving properly if I have two bays loaded (so I have a spare 4GB stick just sitting... :/ ) even though Corsair claimed compatibility. Not sure if I'll RMA them and just get a replacement with something else down the road.

Yeah I was actually thinking the CORSAIR Hydro H70 for cooling but if I don't need that much awesome.

The Power supply I tend to stay on the lower side of things also. I was planning on a 750w for like ~$120 or so.

The case, hah I have a 90 lb shepard/lab mix that sheds EVERYWHERE. So that makes sense to me!

I just read your EDIT too, wow. $500+ more after the conversion. Ouch.

It's funny I never thought RAM would have a compatibility problem with MoBo's. I've never looked at the supported brands on a motherboard website before I purchased them. Guess I should start.. odd too because you'd think ASUS + Corsair would be pretty fail-safe in terms of compatibility.

I tell you though for that price, under $1k. That is a GREAT deal, and I'd finally be in the "high-end" category also (well maybe after new video card but those are always upgradable separately from the MoBo)

Thanks for your help!

One note on the H70 - that thing is LOUD. Since half the point of water is reducing noice, only go for that it you really want to. Also, in the case of the Sabrtooth, you would then definitely need that 50x50 fan unit since the mobo cooling relies on a downward-facing air cooler.

Another note on that as well - the cooling mounts for the processor on the 1155 socket are identical to 1156. So if you find a heatsink assembly you like but it doesn't list 1155 as compatible, but does list 1156, it's fine.

The Corsair A70 (air cooler) is supposedly very quiet, very effective and not too expensive. Just bought mine, but I'm kinda at a loss now that I have to remove cooling paste and whatnot :/

And it seems like the fixed 1155 mobos will be back in stores withing a week or two if the hardware sites don't lie.

hey Eth, is 4.4ghz on water the highest you could OC to?

ref memory, avoid OCZ also, I rma'd 2 sticks to them before going for GEIL.

Haven't even tried going above 4.4GHz. I don't need to go higher for one, and before I have solved the memory issue one way or another I can't be bothered to tinker with it. No point trying to go "extreme" when the build isn't final yet and is being hampered by memory that doesn't want to co-operate.

The 4.4 was achieved through the auto feature. Clicked a button in UEFIBIOS and let the comp reboot a few times, then it set itself to 103bCLK and 43x multiplier. At that configuration it tops out around 55degrees C with Prime95 active with 8 worker threads (31 degree delta from ambient). The in-place Prime95 run where all data and instructions fit in L2 cache it goes a few degrees extra above that, but stays below 60. Note though that this is without fine-tuning the voltage, so I could probably decrease temperatures slightly if I start working the details of voltage settings.

Also, for general testing use I usually remove the OC to get rid of the variable, and lately most of my computer usage has been either DCS:A-10C testing or movies/youtube, which place a further limit on the utility of further OC.

Once the memory situation is fixed though I'm going to see if I can get somewhere around 4.8 or 4.9 at least. Would be sweet to find a way to get 5 stable. (Something that I know these chips can do, but depends on batch and so on.)

Noctura is better than H70 and quieter. According to reviews.

I would grab the 2500k and put the extra money to other things. Not much will use HT unless you have a program you use all the time that utilizes it.

The difference between the Noctua ND-D14 and the H70 are small though, and the H70 (and similars) is that you have greater freedom in DIMM selection and such things.

The big issue regarding noice on the H70 is the included fans. Replace them and it goes down in sound quite a bit.

Agree about 2500K though. For DCS in general it's probably the better cost/performance purchase.
