Retail Stores?

When is it supposed to hit retail stores? Thinking of buying now, but whats the pro's/con's of doing so?

I bought the retail version of Black Shark, all it did was provide the game on a disc, with a minimal manual with a key.

 

In which I still have yet to learn.

So, if I purchase it off this site, I can burn it to dvd? And my CD key is tied to my Forum Sign in?

Yes you can burn it to a disc.

 

Make a digital and hardcopy backup of your key and you should be good to go.

If you buy it through digitalcombatsimulator.com you sign up for an account there, which is separate to the forum login. Once downloaded you can back up the installer files however you like, e.g. burn to DVD, write them to a USB flash drive or external hard drive, put them on a RAID-6 volume, etc. etc.

 

When backing it up, you might also want to add a text file with your serial number and username + password for the DCS site in case you forget it.

To clarify: the only difference between download and box copy is that the box copy delivers the software on a disc. The installer and product behaviour is identical - ie no disc-check etc.

 

Pro:

Users with draconian download caps on their connection or just a very slow connection might want a DVD for easier delivery.

 

Con:

You have to wait for the disc. Box versions are still a couple months out.

Also a con depending on your outlook, disc versions mean less of the money you pay end up with ED, since some has to go to printers, distributors and so on.

Just personally I figure I've waited this long for a boxed version, if I give in now then all the time I didn't get the betas was for nothing.

Boxed version being a personal preference or any other specific reason though? Personally I have ended up completely embracing digital download for all my software purchases, so you'll have to excuse me if I have a slightly hard time understanding that whole box thing.

Oh that and my internet isn't terribly fast here in Australia, and I just like having the disc somewhere so I don't have to worry about backing the files up etc. Guess I'm just living in the past :)

 

I'm tempted to get both though with the exchange rates being pretty good at the moment...

Ah, yeah, slow internet can be an issue, I imagine. Unfortunately I think you'll have something like a month or two of waiting for the DVD to go retail. There is no set date yet.

I can never understand the box reasoning either. If you download the files and immediately burn them to disk, then you have something you can hold. And if you desperately need some cardboard to go with it, (I usually end up throwing away my boxes anyway) easy enough to cut a box out of scrap. You could even print out a cool picture for it. Better off waiting a few more months. Your not missing anything lol.
