Nickhawk Posted March 9, 2011 Posted March 9, 2011 (edited) Hi, i have some questions about the Radios. Are the two VHF Radios in DCS used like in the Real A-10? One Radio for AM and the other for FM only or is this because the limitations of the DCS-Engine? Can you in Real life set both Radios simualtaneous to AM with differrent frequencies and lets say use the front Radio to communicate with JTAC and the aft for AWACS without switching frequencies on the Radio? And if this is in Real life possible why not in DCS? And what for is the FM Radio used in DCS because you cant set there any frequencies to communicate with other units? You can there only set frequencies with 30.000 to 76.000 and the comms of the units in the missions are allways have higher frequencies then 76mhz. MadTommy Posted March 9, 2011 Posted March 9, 2011 Can't anser about 'real' A-10, but here is the pertinent info from the manual.. Top Radio: VHF/AM / AN/ARC-186(V) VHF AM Radio 1 VHF/AM transmits and receives between 116.00 and 151.975 MHz. Used for both air-to-air and air-to-ground communication. _________________________________________________ Middle radio: UHF/AM / AN/ARC-164 UHF Radio The frequency range runs from 225.000 to 399.975 MHz. Used for various assets (wingman, support flights, controllers, etc.) _________________________________________________ Bottom Radio: VHF/FM / AN/ARC-186(V) VHF FM Radio 2 VHF/FM operates between 30.000 and 76.000 MHz Used for both air-to-air and air-to-ground communication. I use the FM Radio for ground JTACs in my missions... i5-3570K @ 4.5 Ghz, Asus P8Z77-V, 8 GB DDR3, 1.5GB GTX 480 (EVGA, superclocked), SSD, 2 x 1680x1050, x-fi extreme music. Eddie Posted March 9, 2011 Posted March 9, 2011 DCS is modelled as per the real aircraft. The FM radio is generally used to communicate with ground forces such as JTAC. And yes it can be used in the sim, the mission designer must however choose to use an FM frequency between 30 and 76mhz rather than AM.

Then is my question why are in the campaign-missions the JTAC uses the AM Radio? So there is no use for the FM Radio in this missions. Would be nice to use all three Radios like in Real. The AM Radio for air-to-air talk and the AM for air-to-ground and UHF for wingmen/flight talk. Eddie Posted March 9, 2011 Posted March 9, 2011 Becasue that's the way they were built, it really is that simple. Mission designers have the choice of what freqency they set AI air and ground forces to use. Using VHF AM for JTAC is not unrealistic, as ground to air radios are available for VHF AM/FM and UHF.
MadTommy Posted March 9, 2011 Posted March 9, 2011 One thing to note.. FM has a shorter range than AM. So i use VHF-FM for contact to ground JTAC, UHF-AM for AFAC & SEAD flight communication and VHF-AM for ATC, Tankers & AWACS etc. i5-3570K @ 4.5 Ghz, Asus P8Z77-V, 8 GB DDR3, 1.5GB GTX 480 (EVGA, superclocked), SSD, 2 x 1680x1050, x-fi extreme music. Nickhawk Posted March 9, 2011 Author Posted March 9, 2011 @MadTommy: thats how i would build missions too, to use all three radios. @Eddi: thx for explanation, so it is like in real how the Radios work in DCS and the use of the FM radio only depends on what frequencies the units use.
