Hey guys,

I've just been checking out this VATSIM thing and the info on the website isn't all that clear. Is it primarily for FSX and based on big servers on which everybody flies? I had a look at getting involved but realised it seems that anything short of real life training is probably not enough!

Anybody experienced it? Is it as cool as it looks? (Cause' virtual airliners are cool, y'know!)

Vatsim is super cool, but you have to really be up to speed with a lot of the nomenclature and procedures of true aviation. It does take some digging to get the info you want. I'm by no means an expert, I looked into it, but unfortunately time doesn't really allow me to experience it full on.

It will definitely bring an element of immersion and realism to those C172 or Twin Otter flights (or heavies if you're flying commercial aviation). The deep you dig, the more you'll find!

The experience I had with it was second to non from an online general aviation standpoint. If you're into that, you won't be disappointed.

At first glance it may seem intimidating and difficult. However if you do your own PPL(A) license you will notice that in RL it is not as scary as it seems, and once you have done that, VATSIM is pretty much nothing else then representation of comms and procedures that you have already experienced during your flight training. So the other way around - if you have have been flying on VATSIM you quickly pick up comms and procedures during your flight training. However there are diffrences between RL and VATSIM and one must never use VATSIM as a training tool, because it may lead to wrong habits. I know few colleagues at work and one from flight training that fly VATSIM a lot. I have tried it honestly not extensively only few times and short. This is because I am bored of flying at home simulator in real-time straight lines - and that's what it is about really. If you are just looking for ATCs, comms and all that, I invite you to join with your LOFC2/DCS our GCI EVENTS on 51st server ^^

I am a member and I can tell you that the experience is awsome. It is very intimidating at first but if you hook up with a couple of members who can walk you through it takes that away. I am a member of a VA ( Reddog Airlines) and we are on there often.

Problem I always had with VATSIM has always been spotty live controller coverage.
