Right, often I don't rant but...

 

I ran out of activations for A-10..and am now sat here unable to play it despite spending money on it, commenting (hopefully contributing to a better product) on issues in the beta, and buying other ED products.

 

This isn't so much a criticism of ED as I understand they want to protect their product, but ultimately, what is the point? Anybody that wants to crack the game will (albeit a week later) which ultimately leaves us, the paying consumers, as the only people that suffer.

 

Whilst I await ED to update my activations (having spent a lot of money on all their products which I will continue to do) I have no doubt there are a plethora of pirates enjoying the game that I (like all of you) paid to have developed.

 

Seems the irony of software piracy protection is that the only people that suffer are the honest customers!

You seem to be a very impulsive person. You reinstalled it 8 times already. Software piracy protection discussions are forbidden.

Reinstalling doesn't use an activation, so there is something else at work here.

 

Not to worry, at most you'll have a month to wait until an activation is automatically added.

Guys, I'm not so much talking about myself nor do I appreciate comments about my own mental state (i.e impulsive). I had a failing hard drive and had a huge number of issues. I have already commented and will get activations back soon.

 

What I am debating is, whether piracy protection is worth it when the pirates can play with no hassle.

Yes, you're right, a failing hard drive. I think I made this thread to discuss the philosophy of software piracy and anti piracy, as opposed to a general rant. Just interested to hear both sides of the argument as opposed to a critique of my hard drive :D

I'm hoping ED will look at my activations and see they all came from the same IP. Anyway, I find it strange that we're not allowed to debate the implications of piracy protection. I'm not talking about outright rant, just implications...Still, if that's their rules then it's their rules.

They will even pirate games that donate all of the income to charity.

 

The current set up ED is using now is the best I've seen, at least your able to get activations back. It may be silly, but it beats not doing anything.

You think? We used to have Janes, 4.0, IL, Flanker, F16 sims all over the place, loads of chopper sims, flight unlimited... I think if you think the simulator market is as healthy as it was 10 years ago you're definitely wrong.

 

Even FS has been discontinued, that was always the flagship (though granted, not the best) of flight simulation.

 

If it continues I'm going to have to buy a real jet to get my fix :D

You are very being hostile, please stop trying to find acts of hostility that don't exist. We only have a few sims left, and it is not a great exaggeration to say that flight simulation is at a crossroad. Whether it's at a point of return (as seen with RoF, A10, the new iL game) or whether it's going to disappear (as copy protection may get inhibitive and complex to the point that it's not longer profitable to make the games) only time will tell....

I think the only lesson learned here has been that miscommunication can easily ensue, when you lack the full range of communicative capacities that we use in face to face speech. If you'd have received my statement as intended it would've come less as trying to put words in your mouth, but as an attempt to extract your meaning and debate it. Though if we'd have been speaking face to face then I expect I would have received your statement differently and the conversation may well have taken an entirely different direction.

 

Still, I see no need for you to refer to me as impulsive absent any evidence or even a clue as to my situation. Pointless judgement does not become you.

If we were face to face I would still have told you that me saying "Its not dying" doesnt mean that I just said "Its just as healthy as it was in its prime" and I would give you a very angry suspicious look for trying to pin something on me that I didnt say :D

They cannot, and yes it's worth it. The only comment I'll leave on that topic is that 99.5% of people commenting on DRM and piracy don't understand how it works and what it actually does for the company that is protecting it's product. And that's fair enough, no-one needs to know everything (or even could). Unfortunately it's not like content producers and DRM service providers are eager to help point out how it works and why it works that way to those that may want to "use" it, so that type of discussion is just never going to end well.

 

And for that reason, the piracy/DRM discussion ends right now.

 

Regarding activations, like Eddie said, it really takes a lot to burn through 8 activations already. Reinstallation isn't enough, hard drive transplant isn't enough. In fact, the only thing that on it's own would cause a new activation would be changing processor and possibly changing OS (in both cases deactivation would solve it). Which is what Eddie means when saying that there's something else going on if activations are being burned that fast.
