Bahger Posted March 15, 2011 Posted March 15, 2011 I'm investigating every possible cause of a fail notification (crash) on exit from a mission. I'm wondering if any of my gfx settings in-game might be responsible. It's not as though I have been aggressive in my settings (i.e. I have no blur, water at low, most other vis settings at medium, basically the same as the settings in Matt Wagner's sig) and my PC is very capable (nVidia 285, up to date drivers, Vista 64x, 6GB RAM, 3.4Ghz factory o/c). However, I am insufficiently familiar with the acronyms (VSYNCH, HDAA, etc.) that can be found in the advanced gfx properties tab in Controls. Can anyone enlighten me and advise re. the best settings for stability? Apart from the one persistent exit crash failure (and that's in one mission only, my own...) and occasional crashes when rendering very elaborate explosions from close by, A-10 has been pretty well-mannered for me.
SFJackBauer Posted March 16, 2011 Posted March 16, 2011 Dont think graphics would influence on a crash at the end of a mission... Did you submit crash logs? Perhaps the sim is trying to write a logfile of the mission and does not have permission, or something similar. Also you may want to check your disk or RAM for errors. Some seemingly random crashes I had in the past (that weren't for overclocking :)) were simply because of bad sectors or faulty RAM chips. But if a crash occurs consistently at one point, then the developers should be able to at least track it.
Bahger Posted March 16, 2011 Author Posted March 16, 2011 Thanks, SFJackBauer (or, given your name, I should say "Roger that"...) If the sim is trying to write a logfile and does not have permission, is there any way to grant permission in Windows that I might be unaware of?

DayGlow Posted March 16, 2011 Posted March 16, 2011 V-sync - locking the video frames of the game to the refresh rate of your screen. With it off your graphics card throws it's rendered frames out as fast as they are generated. Thus can cause 'tearing' by having half an image on screen when a new one is generated. V-sync removes tearing, but locks you in under it's refresh rate. So a 60hz monitor will never display more than 60fps. HDR- High Dynamic Range. Models glare and your eyes adjusting from going from light to dark and the reverse. SSAA - Super Sampling Anti Alaising. Type of anti alaising that works by taking a larger sample and rendering it down. Say you run the game at 1600x900. The game engine renders the scene at double or triple the resolution internally, then samples it down to the output rez. A very gpu intensive way of removing jaggy edges of an image. 104th_Crunch Posted March 16, 2011 Posted March 16, 2011 Read this excellent article. http://www.tweakguides.com/Graphics_9.html It has great pictures to if you are like me and dislike reading.
Bahger Posted March 16, 2011 Author Posted March 16, 2011 Thanks guys. REL, you nailed it. I think I have now fixed it. My system is unusually rigid about admin permissions and wouldn't let DCS A-10 write a file (probably the mission track) to the HD after exiting the mission. Solution: Start the sim by right-clicking the .exe and using "Run as Administrator".
