pcalvert Posted June 6, 2011 Author Posted June 6, 2011 It's funny all this building work and I can count the amount of times I have actually used DCS A10C on the fingers of one hand. Haven't even used my WH yet (only for a quick test). I had maybe one free flight in the hog. One thing I really did l.ike was the flight model. It was very much like a glider the way you have to use the energy of the aircraft.... I was impressed, lovely to fly. I will obviously have a steep learning curve to learn to fly the hog after I have finished my pit! pcalvert Posted June 9, 2011 Author Posted June 9, 2011 Seat supports I've finished the new seat supports. I have to make a new seat pan now (this weekend) the seating position is much better. I'll post some pics this weekend. At the moment I am using this pit (see attached) I built it from an old medical chair I found at the dump (it needed cutting up because It moved in varios ways!) then I bought a Tillett racing seat from ebay and added my X52 pro. Works really well - although it is quite small. I am going to sell it when I finish my new pit - so if anyone is interested let me know. pcalvert Posted June 10, 2011 Author Posted June 10, 2011 Seat test It's been a long week work wise, so I haven't been able to do too much. However, I tested the seat postion and view through the canopy tonight and it feels as if the basics are coming together. I am going to make a new seat pan tomorrow and the joystick needs to come back about an inch to fully clear the instrument panel. I took one picture to try and show the view through the canopy... isn't great but you might get an idea. I need to start work on bulding the steps and arm rest/ mouse mat, so i'll take a look at that ths weekend - see if I can work out how to do it. The instrument panel in the pictures is just one I messed up and now use for tests (for size, clearence etc). pcalvert Posted June 11, 2011 Author Posted June 11, 2011 New seat Finished the new seat today. I had to move the stick back 3/4" so had to make a new mount for the jotstick 3/4" longer. The seat was widened an inch as well. The stick clears the instrument panel by 1/2" which is fine. I still have work to do on the rudder but will do some work on the throttle before I get to that. Anyway, the seat fits, is comfortable and has plenty of leg room. I want the throttle to look like it's seated, so will make the panel from MFD so that it is flush. I am also going to use a Belkin N52 te behind the thottle. I'll see what I can get done tomorrow. pcalvert Posted June 12, 2011 Author Posted June 12, 2011 Test Took a few more pics before I strip everything out again. The screen etc looks a bit scratched.. It's not it's just the plastic covering to protect it. I was trying the place the throttle so that I can mark out the panel going over it. I'ts a struggle to get into at the moment but once you are seated - it feels great... Hopefully when it all comes together it will be quite immersive. When I extend the glare shield I want to put small LED's underneath, so they light the instrument panel (I tried to create the effect - crudely - in the pictures.. but it gives the general idea. I am also going to downlight - above the throttle housing. There is room also to put a small light on a flexable arm (for map reading etc)... pcalvert Posted June 16, 2011 Author Posted June 16, 2011 Thanks Succellus. All this building work is new to me. I'm just trying my best not to mess it up! It's also hard to be objective so it's nice to get comments from other people. I've taken off the extension from the side because I want to work on it this weekend to try and seat the throttle and N52.. I'll take some pics of my progress. I also found on-line a company that sells all sorts of LED lighting (for the flood lighting and spot lights I want to use).... this is the address, if anyone needs something similar... http://www.litewave.co.uk/index.htm Asus Rampage II Extreme, i7 920 @3.8Gh, 6Gb Corsair Dominator 1600hz, Msi GTX 470 Twin Frozr, Corsair 850w Mod PSU, TIR 5, HOTAS WH
bigbadthomazzz Posted June 16, 2011 Posted June 16, 2011 Looks realy awesome. How is the seat now? I am in hospital right now, but i gonna start building next week i hope :)
pcalvert Posted June 16, 2011 Author Posted June 16, 2011 The seat is good Thomas... still a lot to do though... Wish I didn't have to work haha :) Asus Rampage II Extreme, i7 920 @3.8Gh, 6Gb Corsair Dominator 1600hz, Msi GTX 470 Twin Frozr, Corsair 850w Mod PSU, TIR 5, HOTAS WH
andy_burnton Posted June 16, 2011 Posted June 16, 2011 Hi, Absolutely brilliant pit. Suggest you use some of this: http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/Flexible-SMD-LED-NEON-strip-GREEN-10cm-piece-UK-Fast-/310176578295?_trksid=p5197.m7&_trkparms=algo%3DLVI%26itu%3DUCI%26otn%3D3%26po%3DLVI%26ps%3D63%26clkid%3D688841689502669339 It runs from 12v DC, you can cut it in to smaller sections and it's sticky backed. I used it for cabin lighting in my pit. Will you be hiding the cables for the MFDs behind the panel ? Looks a bit strange with them across the guages. Cheers, Andy
pcalvert Posted June 16, 2011 Author Posted June 16, 2011 Hi Andy, They cant go behind the MFCD's because there is perspex behind that seats the panel into the monitor. I am going to run them directly beneath the MFCD's and out to the side. Should look okay. The LCD's look good. Do you have any pics of your pit, so I can see what they look like lit up? awdrgyjo Posted June 17, 2011 Posted June 17, 2011 What a shame, I used to have a third share in a K6E, IMHO the best wooden glider ever built, still, its being kept to good use, good luck to you.
pcalvert Posted June 17, 2011 Author Posted June 17, 2011 I agree - but it needed a complete re-build. The only thing worth keeping was the cockpit. The rest of it was a mess. IMHO also - I think they were probably one of the best in their class :) Asus Rampage II Extreme, i7 920 @3.8Gh, 6Gb Corsair Dominator 1600hz, Msi GTX 470 Twin Frozr, Corsair 850w Mod PSU, TIR 5, HOTAS WH
pcalvert Posted June 17, 2011 Author Posted June 17, 2011 Throttle Just made a mock up for the throttle with card. I'm going to use 6mm MDF and 2mm plastic sheet to make it. I'll put the swiches for the cockpit lights in-between the the throttle and the n52. I'm not sure about painting at the moment. The WH throttle is glossy black, so I'm not sure if I should paint the panel like the instrument panel or paint it the same as the throttle! :) Asus Rampage II Extreme, i7 920 @3.8Gh, 6Gb Corsair Dominator 1600hz, Msi GTX 470 Twin Frozr, Corsair 850w Mod PSU, TIR 5, HOTAS WH
pcalvert Posted June 19, 2011 Author Posted June 19, 2011 Getting there Have cut evrything out - just gluing togther now. Good position for the N52. feels comfortable sloping down. Should have it finshed and sprayed by next weekend. My dog was interested too! :) Asus Rampage II Extreme, i7 920 @3.8Gh, 6Gb Corsair Dominator 1600hz, Msi GTX 470 Twin Frozr, Corsair 850w Mod PSU, TIR 5, HOTAS WH
bigbadthomazzz Posted June 20, 2011 Posted June 20, 2011 Your pit looks awesome, and your dog aswell :D is the pit frame it self finnished? Let i say without the side panels :)? Best regards, Thomas
pcalvert Posted June 20, 2011 Author Posted June 20, 2011 Hi Thomas, No, I still have to sort the rudder and make a step on the side (so you can get in to the pit!) After that I'll skin the inside with ply, sand down the outside and paint. I also need to get the seat covered - I was going to do this in olive green - the inside black and the outside grey - oh, still have to add the UFC to the instrument panel and sort out the lighting (I ordered these today).... How is your pit going? 1 Asus Rampage II Extreme, i7 920 @3.8Gh, 6Gb Corsair Dominator 1600hz, Msi GTX 470 Twin Frozr, Corsair 850w Mod PSU, TIR 5, HOTAS WH
Succellus Posted June 20, 2011 Posted June 20, 2011 Hahahha Your dog is looking at you in a fashion i would translate: Are you still sane ? Great pit anyway, i see you re beaten by the cockpit building virus. Just remember to play when the basic is finished, before you devise something more to add. Some people are so addicted, that it seems DCS ain t important, important is building the pit... pcalvert Posted June 20, 2011 Author Posted June 20, 2011 Yes you're right Succellus - it's easy to be drawn in! I think my dog was hacked off because he wasn't getting enough attention... he knows I've never been sane.. haha. Trouble is, I was given a great opportunity here and I'd like it to look halfway decent. Getting there slowly......... I must admit though I do enjoy trying to work out how I am going to do things... for the least cost! pcalvert Posted June 20, 2011 Author Posted June 20, 2011 Thinking about it... I went on ebay today and bought a cockpit lamp from an F4 - also found a landing light switch (looked the same as the A10 one - but think it was from an airliner) I was also considering making a landing gear lever (someone else did it on this site.. can't remember his name)..... so you are right. I must have the pit building virus!! Asus Rampage II Extreme, i7 920 @3.8Gh, 6Gb Corsair Dominator 1600hz, Msi GTX 470 Twin Frozr, Corsair 850w Mod PSU, TIR 5, HOTAS WH

pcalvert Posted June 20, 2011 Author Posted June 20, 2011 Update Joined and sanded. Have to sand the rest (the cutout for N52). Prime and spray. Will probably get LED switches for the lights. Maybe a few other switches and knobs - don't know yet. Asus Rampage II Extreme, i7 920 @3.8Gh, 6Gb Corsair Dominator 1600hz, Msi GTX 470 Twin Frozr, Corsair 850w Mod PSU, TIR 5, HOTAS WH
Succellus Posted June 21, 2011 Posted June 21, 2011 A question.. have you let a place for your keyboard ? Its a cockpit but unfortunatly we re still on a PC and we still need it. Or is the N52 suficient to replace it ? HaF 922, Asus rampage extreme 3 gene, I7 950 with Noctua D14, MSI gtx 460 hawk, G skill 1600 8gb, 1.5 giga samsung HD. pcalvert Posted June 21, 2011 Author Posted June 21, 2011 Ah - good question Succellus. I DO have to use my PC for other things as well. I think the N52 will be fine for the Sim. I'm going to make a sort of map pocket to hold my full size key board (it is very slim) and just rest it on my lap when I need to use it - should be okay there is plenty of room. pcalvert Posted July 5, 2011 Author Posted July 5, 2011 Panel Qucik update :) I've been really busy at work so haven't had much time to build. I've made the panel now - just have to screw it in and should be done. I've tested the green flood lights and white spot lights and they look good. I'll fit the whole thing together with the lights and post some pics. Taken one of the panel (crap pic!) to show where I've added the toggle switches and LED push switch.
