Tackir 5 tuning

Recommended Posts

I am new to the whole head tracking gear, and got the trackir 5 just last week, but im having alot of trouble fine tuning the thing to work. its' either too much movement and i can't keep it still long enough to click switches or too slow to move around and look behind me well enough or zoom in well enough to see stuff in the cockpit. anyone found a decent set up that works? i can't find a good balance of speed and smoothness, and its starting to give me a headache lol:cry:

One thing I found about TrackiR is that it takes a bit of getting use to. 1 week is not long enough it may take a month or so to really get use to using it and even then it is still tough to hit switches without the view moving on you. One way around this is to bind the trackIr pause key to a button on your Hotas. The issue is it is unnatural to move your head to look left/right/up/down but keep your eyes looking forward to see what you are looking for...its not how we are wired so you have to train yourself to get use to it.

Eventually what will happen to you is that you will be watching DCS:A10 videos or any sim videos on youtube and you will be trying to change the view by moving your head only to realize its a video. I do it all the time and it makes me feel like an idiot or maybe I just fly 10 way to much....nah.

Reminds me, I'm kind of deaf in my right ear. Driving down the road, wife is talking to me in front passenger seat and several times now I have reached for the analog radio dial to increase her volume. LOL!

Like that?

I just got TrackIR5 myself. In fact, I just got the whole shibang (pedals, TM Warthog and TrackIR5). Trying them out all at once is quite a sensory mix. At one point while muddled, I was trying to change the attitude of the aircraft with my head movements. Very silly I know. ;)

Anyway, I find that when I run the TrackIR5 software, on the left side is some tweaking options. On some of the dropdown menus there are some presets, and one of them is "smooth". I set that, and it seems to help substantially. The use of the F12 key to center the tracking on your current head position/alignment is also great. You can even do it in game. I think I still need to tweak it probably, as the top of my monitor is a little bit above my head level, so when I look down, and really peer at the left console or somesuch, it loses tracking. Works excellently apart from that though, and feels very natural. :) But that's the whole point. *cough*

I bought mine a couple weeks ago. It is still in the shipping box, unopened.

I learn this thing in chunks.

It took a month to get my CH profile working to my satisfaction.

The next smart thing to do is get my views down. The keyboard views are good enough, but not really sufficient if fighting multiple enemies at once. Though that is more an issue dog-fighting and situational awareness.

I can start the plane up, take off, fly around, navigate, and land it, all in full SIM mode.

I still need to learn all the rest of it.

I spend a lot of time just reading forums and sometimes asking questions.

And then there is YouTube.

Coming into DCS completely green is a challenge.

And, though I probably should not do so just yet, I'm itching to get DCS: Black Shark.

I should just focus on Warthog and at least get good enough at all the systems and fine tune later before getting the helicopter. But I probably won't.
