What is the best way to purchase Black Shark for the latest configuration?

I have Windows 7 Ultimate, 64 bit; i7-920 cpu.

Is there a need to set it back using the Compatibility settings?

I am hoping in the future Black Shark would have the ability to kill Warthogs and visa versa, online.

Thanks.

i got similar machine (i7, 8GB Ram, gtx275 1.8GB with win7 x64) and i bought DCS thru Steam... no problems and game runs smoothly even on highest details ;)

I got the boxed version but nowadays I would prefer Steam. The fact that you don't have to activate/deactivate your product seems a lot more worry-free.

When I am going to get DCS:Warthog I would choose Steam unless I could find a boxed version at lower price.

Depends on your objective in the purchase. Purchasing through digitalcombatsimultor.com is the best method to ensure that as much of your money as possible goes to the guys who actually made it.

I was actually wondering about this too. If I download DCS will I be able to load it on another computer someday? Im still a ways from getting enough cash to build a computer for it but I was thinking of going ahead and buying the game so I can start reading the manual in my spare time

And if my objective is to support ED - because I do greatly enjoy their work - but also convey the fact that I prefer Steam's more-often-problem-free DRM solution to the one used in the non-steam version? (This isn't a debate between DRM's, I'm very clearly stating steam is my preference based on my experiences and nothing more.) The developers get most of my money, and they deserve it, but I am happy to also send them a message that I prefer a less onerous DRM solution. As you said, my purchase location reflects my objectives.

And no, I'm not some self-entitled pirate; I was frustrated at how FC2 regularly freaked out at me whenever I would swap joysticks or webcams or other ancillary pieces of hardware. Merely taking my computer to a LAN and back would regularly use up two activations - at the LAN and then returning home with my other hardware! I'm not at all sorry to say that was a deal-breaker for me and I bought Black Shark through Steam. Black Shark and A-10 use the same system, and I wasn't about to gamble on Black Shark being more polite. I'll happily pick up A-10 if it is ever switched to Steam DRM or another digital distribution vendor's version. (I doubt it'll ever happen, but I can hope.)

Or you could simply download the manual from ED and then get the sim at a later date. :-)

As much as I love Steam (and hate the fact that my DCS Black Shark is non Alt-Tab-able with the Steam Overlay), I'd rather have all my money go straight to the devs, Eagle Dynamics in this case, which is why I bought the game directly from their site.

This sounds like FC1, not FC2. FC1 relied on the old driver-based SF. DCS:BS, FC2, and DCS:A-10C does not. They use a completely new system that has no driver component and has zero power over your system. (Less power than the MSN client - literally.) You need to do some pretty radical stuff to eat activations, beyond a few known issues with VM sofware and such. If activations run out, you can get a refill. In the case of DCS:A-10C, refill is automatic.

I modify my computer a lot (and not just plugging peripherals in and out - I switch memory and hard drives around on pretty much a monthly basis) and I have never been asked to spend new activations.

If it was indeed FC2, I believe you are reacting to seeing the activation box come up a little now and then when something has changed or something has caused registry entries to go awry. In this case - read closely on the box after entering the serial number: it'll typically tell you something like "this product is already activated for this machine, use existing activation?" In which case no new activation is actually spent.

I'll happily pick up A-10 if it is ever switched to Steam DRM or another digital distribution vendor's version. (I doubt it'll ever happen, but I can hope.)

The hindrance for DCS:A-10C on Steam is that DCS:A-10C is a 64-bit application. Steam's solution does not support that.

I hadn't thought of this. Although it doesn't affect me because I bought KA50 and A10C direct from ED, it's good info to pass along when the need arises.
