Introduction: On 2 August 1990 Iraq invaded its tiny neighbour Kuwait, rapidly moving south to the border of Saudi Arabia. Kuwait's small air force, equipped with a handful of A-4KU Skyhawks, BAe Hawk Mk 64s and Mirage F.ICKs was no match for over 800 Iraqi combat aircraft, and its formidable army.

Although the majority of the United Nations condemned the invasion when it appeared that Iraq might continue to march into Saudi Arabia, Saddam Hussein, Iraq's President, was seemingly unmoved by UN Resolutions including No 661 on 6 August that imposed economic sanctions. On the following day, 7 August, President Bush announced that US fighter aircraft were to be sent to Saudi Arabia. Thus began the huge deployment of men and machines on a scale never seen before. Almost all US frontline types (except the B-1B Lancer) were to see service first in the build up - Operation Desert Shield- and then in the air war - Operation Desert Storm. The RAF was quick to respond also, sending a combined squadron of Tornado F.3s on Armament Practice Camp (APC) at Akrotiri to Dhahran, together with Jaguar GR.lAs and Tornado GR.ls to Bahrain before the end of August under the code name Operation Granby. The French, Italians and Canadians were all quickly involved with deployments of frontline aircraft. At sea there was a correspondingly big multi-national build up of surface vessels, including US Navy aircraft carriers.

By 17 January 1991 the stage was set for the most effective use of air power the world has ever seen. Led by the Americans, the coalition aircraft effectively destroyed the Iraqi Air Force and key elements of the country's infrastructure in just a few weeks. From the time that absolute air supremacy had been achieved by the coalition air arms, the removal of Iraqi forces from Kuwait was inevitable. On 24 February the ground war, Operation Desert Sabre, began. The Iraqi Army had been 'steered' into the belief that the attack would come from the sea. This was not to be as the main thrust was from the south-west and west, with pincer movement cutting the Iraqi forces off from their supply lines to the north. President Bush announced a ceasefire at midnight on 2 7 February and on 3 March it was formally signed. The Gulf War was over.

Many types of aircraft and weapons saw operational service for the first time in Desert Storm. 'Newcomers' like the F-117A, F-15E Strike Eagle and Tornado took their place alongside veterans such as the B-52G, F-4 Phantom II and A-7 Corsair II. New tactics were employed, most, but not all of which were successful. The use of the E-3 AWACS as an airborne radar command and control system was notable, as was the precision laser guided bombing by several types of aircraft and the effective use of radar suppression

This Desert Warpaint book takes a look at the wide range of aircraft operated in the Gulf during Desert Storm, and the colourful warpaint that some of them employed. It does not set out to be comprehensive nor all-embracing, but rather more it aims to give a representative picture of the diverse and interesting aircraft, and their markings, operated by the coalition air arms during the Gulf War. Desert Warpaint is a personal collation of photographs showing these aircraft and their colour schemes and individual markings.

Introduction: The elite forces of the Soviet Union and its Warsaw Pact allies are undoubtedly the largest in the world, and among the least known. Indeed, the Soviet elite formations alone have d total strength comparable to that of the entire British armed forces. There are extensive references to elite formations in Soviet military publications, but seldom is any detail provided on their mission or scope. The same is the ease with the allied armies of the Warsaw Pact. The aim of this book is to provide a general review of these enigmatic troops through an examination of their historical roots, current organisation, equip¬ment, uniforms and probable missions. (Due to the sensitive nature of this subject there are, neverthe¬less, units which cannot be covered in this book.) The elite forces of the Soviet Union and the Warsaw Pact differ from their Western counter¬parts in a number of respects. Besides the conventional military elite formations such as airborne and marine forces, most Warsaw Pact armies have special, -political' (-lite formations which are used for internal security. These are not merely police formations, but have a distinct and important military role in time of war: units like the KGB's Border Guards have seen combat more often since 1945 than nearly any other Soviet military formation. Therefore, while the main focus of this book will be on the more conventional elite (brmations, some attention will be paid to these often ignored security units.

Introduction: While much has been published on the armed forces of the Union of Soviet Socialist Republics (USSR), little is available on the forces provided by the other member nations of the Warsaw Pact (WP). These forces should not be taken lightly, as they represent a substantial military potential. The combined ground forces of the six non-Soviet Warsaw Pact (NSWP) countries total over 775,000 active troops, rivalling the United States' 781,000-man Active Army. They also maintain almost two million ground forces reserves. These figures do not include the air forces, naval forces, and the many internal security and border forces.

In recent years there has been much conjecture on the military potential and reliability (in the eyes of the Soviets) of the NSWP forces, but little information is available about the troops and units. This book will attempt to provide information on the historical background, origins, strength, organ¬isation, order of battle, terms of service, reserves and mobilisation, internal security forces, and possible combat effectiveness of the forces of each of these nations. A study of WP special operations forces (airborne, diversionary, mountain, naval infantry) can be found in Elite 5, Soviet Bloc Elite Forces.

Introduction:'Military service is the sacred obligation of Soviet citizens'; so reads the Constitution of the USSR. For a young Soviet man, the chances are very great that he will be obliged to serve for at least two years in one branch or another of the Soviet Armed Forces.

By the time that they reach the conscription age of 18 years, most Soviet boys will already be far more familiar with military life than their counterparts in Western Europe or America. Soviet society is far more militarised than most other European societies, even compared with the other Warsaw Pact countries. The exploits of the Soviet Armed Forces during the Second World War— better known as die Great Patriotic War in tin-USSR—are recounted daily on television and radio and in the print media. It is rare to (ind a bookstore widioui a shelf devoted to war stories, or to read a magazine aimed at young adults which does not contain such material. In some areas it has become a Soviet tradition to lay flowers at a war memorial following wedding ceremonies. Members of the Voting Pioneers, the state youth movement for pre-teenagers, serve as guards of honour at local war memorials, bedecked in special uniforms and often carrying weapons. This fixation on the war stems, in pan. from the enormous human cost of the fighting--nearly one in ten Soviet citizens were killed between 1941 and 1945.

Introduction: The thawing of the Cold War in the late 1980s, that preceded the disintegration of the Soviet Union into today's Commonwealth of Independent States (CIS), also served to raise the security curtain that had for decades surrounded combat aircraft in the East. The first manifestations of this new openness were the appearances of the MiG-29s at Farnborough in 1988 and the Su-27s at Le Bourget the following year.

This sudden relaxation of security was an eye-opener in several respects for long-time Western observers of the Soviet aerospace scene. For decades we had been brain¬washed with the idea that designers on the other side of the Iron Curtain were basically plagiarists, and that their avionics and missiles were consistently a generation behind those at our disposal. In stark contrast to this belief, we learned that the Sukhoi and Mikoyan design bureaux were capable of highly original thought, that they were certainly willing to adopt ideas that had never been tested in the West, and that (in the case of the fourth postwar combat aircraft generation) they had gone to quite extraordinary lengths to perfect handling qualities.

It may be argued that this emphasis on flying characteristics was merely a reaction to the unsatisfactory safety record of the MiG-23/27 series, but the fact remains that Russian fighters are now being flown in a way that is simply not possible with their Western equivalents.

We also discovered in the late 1980s that the Soviets were ahead of us in the use of helmet-mounted sights and IRST (infra-red search and tracking systems) to augment the use of air intercept radars, and that they had developed special devices to protect their engines when operating from badly-surfaced (or bomb-damaged) runways. The Soviets had also shown considerable originality in facilitating the operation of the Su-25 from small dispersed sites, and their experience in Afghanistan had been put to good use in the protective measures fitted to that aircraft. On the other hand, some of the traditional faults of Soviet aircraft remained. The MiG-29 was found to have a very short engine life, and it was clearly designed for a 'straight up, straight down' point defence sortie, which results in an outstanding thrust/weight ratio but very little fuel. In exporting their aircraft, it was found that the Russians had still not managed to develop satisfactory product support facilities.

Aside from discovering the remarkable qualities of their combat aircraft, we found that their designers were not only highly intelligent, but quite approachable, and willing to discuss their design philosophies in some detail. We saw that their test pilots were highly skilled, and we found they were just as great characters as their Western equivalents.

More recently, as the Russian economy has foundered, and all its citizens have become anxious to earn Western currency, we have discovered that their photographers are also fully capable of producing pictures to Western standards. After years of seeing uninformative, blurred reproductions in Soviet newspapers and magazines, this was just as great a surprise as the quality of the aircraft and of the people responsible for them.

The photographs selected by the editor for this book were chosen mainly for their sheer quality and information content. However, in covering many of the principal Russian combat aircraft types in service in the early 1990s they also provide a historical record of an air force (and to some extent the naval aviation service) at a critical time in its history. In the course of the next few years the present major cutbacks will continue, and many of the aircraft illustrated in these pages will undoubtedly be retired. These photographs may thus be regarded as a series of images of one of the world's greatest air forces when at its peak

Introduction: Without doubt, the WARSAW Pact was a powerful military instrument of post Second World War Europe. The North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO) was always faced b> numerically superior forces both on the ground and in the air. The only real advantage NATO enjoyed was one of quality.

Since the ad vein on'crc.umjka and Glauiost. the Cold War has begun to thaw. Mikhail Gorbachev initiated the "new age" in Europe and the old WARSAW Pact military alliance began to crumble. As the Eastern European nations began shedding their communist governments, the need for the WARSAW Pact disappeared.

During late February 1991. the foreign and defense ministers of the WARSAW Pact nations met in Hudapest and agreed that the military alliance be officially disbanded as of 31 March 1991. The agreement was signed by all member nations except Germany, which had already left the Pact as of 24Seplember 1990. Asaresultof this agreement Soviet uniLs left Hungary. I /.echoslovakia and Poland. The political establishment was officially disbanded on 1 July 1991. Under a separate agreement between Germam and the Soviet Union, the 550,000 militan, personnel in Germany will be returned to the Soviet Union by late 1994.

With the reunification of Germany, one of the largest WARSAW Pact air forces ceased to exist. While a few aircraft were absorbed into the new German air force, a great many will be sold or scrapped. Their ultimate fate is at this point unknown.

The aim of this book is not to talk about the strategy of the WAR¬SAW Pact. It is rather a pictorial history of [he WARSAW Pact air forces since 1955.
