So, I have seen/heard a few rumors blowing around that Intel's next chipset will feature quad-channel RAM support. Is this true? I hope not, because I really wanted to be able to re-use my current triple channel RAM.

That's not a rumor, it's a fact.

Just buy another stick of RAM and be done with it?

Or just keep using only three channels.

In either case you're not losing anything.

Also, this is at least another 8 months in the future....

Yup, just buy 1 more stick of ram and bingo, you will have your quad channel.

Dual/triple/quad channel isnt anything to do with the ram, its the motherboard, so just hook up 4 same or very similar sticks and bobs yer uncle.

You may not be required to buy additional RAM either, some boards today that run in higher modes will operate at the lower mode when less sticks of ram are used or mismatched anyway (i.e. 2x 4gb sticks and 1x 2gb stick in a duall channel board, if the bios allows it, will just run in single channel mode instead).

Arguably there's not a need today for more than dual channel for consumer systems. As and when that changes, is likely to be a slow process and not something that will obsolete you overnight.
