Hi ladies,

just a question:

when playing FC2, every now and then I get some heavy stuttering (for 1-3 seconds) while earing typical hard disk I/O noise.

Is it realated to the fact that my video card - a 4870 - has only 512 RAM?

What else?

my sys: Phenom II X4 955, HD4870 512, 4Gb RAM, WinXP pro, fly @ 1920x1080, almost everything maxed out

Thanx for support

Quite likely, my last videocard was a 3850 512mb and i used to get quite bad stuttering and HDD accessing, especially moreso in detailed areas like in the SE of the map.

Since then, i've aquired a 5770 with 1024mb and it's alot smoother.

Hi Black Sheep. I see two issues of contention in your setup. First, an older video card with only 512MB VRAM is definitely a bottleneck. Having used a RADEON HD4850/512MB myself with DCS A-10C I had no option but to reduce texture detail Medium to alleviate the graphical bottleneck. With the decoupling of world and cockpit texture resolution in the latest 1.1.0.8 patch, Low texture detail may even be an acceptable compromise. I would also highly recommend reducing water detail to medium and disabling HDR. You should get a decent experience at your specified resolution without crippling quality compromises.

Furthermore your use of XP Pro is also a limitation, assuming it is the standard 32-bit version. Check Mustang's signature for the forum threads detailing workarounds for the OS's memory limitations. Upgrading to a 64-bit OS will significantly improve the game's performance and stability (going from WinXP/32 to Win7/64 did wonders for me), although I believe the latest 1.1.0.8 patch goes some way to address this issue as well.

Good luck.

Graphics memory should have nothing to do with HDD-based stuttering. Could be a matter of not enough RAM or inefficient buffering. Here more memory or a more modern OS will help.

Also, increasing bandwidth to storage might help - installing an SSD speeds that kind of thing up nicely.

Thanks for support.

Within tomorrow I'm going to order a 6950 2Gb, probably a Sapphire.

About the memory: unluckely I must stay with Windows XP because of my old TM HOTAS that uses game port (Win7 doesn't support gameport anymore).

As soon as I'll get a Cougar I'll go for Win7.

At the moment, with WinXP32, the only thing I can do is trying the "3Gb trick".

Do you think that installing Win XP64 will help?

I suspect you'd have trouble finding drivers for your HOTAS in XP 64, as well... Do some research before you take the chance.

You could be right... and after all, reinstalling OS, drivers, apps and what else... is no joy!
