Bill S.978 Could kill your video's

Regardless of the video. There is in the future a "possibility" you could go to jail for uploading or streaming your game footage. Just do yourself a favor and listen to what he has to say. With the Government you never know what they'll do next.

Only applies in the US. Fortunately, most of the rest of the world has a more relaistic viewpoint on copyrights etc.

This here isn't as much about a view on copyright as it is a case of unintended consequences, and that happens before. I think it was greece that accidently made computer games illegal without government permit - the law was intended to regulate electronic slot machines and such but accidently made it illegal to play Snake on your phone. (It was a long time ago though - 10 years or something like that, so my memory might be mixing things up.) People not having a good idea about the computer games industry isn't exactly new - a couple years ago for the Swedish elections a survey to candidates was sent out regarding their views on legislation that applies to computer games, and an absolute majority of them thought we were talking about slot machines and internet-based casinos... :P

Please do not make this a political discussion or a rant about copyright. Deviations in those directions will be cause for administrative action with this post acting as the only prior warning that will be given.

Apparently DMCA takedown notices simply aren't enough. It is quite telling that via a quick internet search that there are 0 gaming groups officially backing this bill. For the most part it is associations affiliated with movies, music, tv, and radio.

Aside from the gaming perspective, I really really hope this bill fails.

The right man in the wrong place makes all the difference in the world.

Yes EtherealIN, It was 10 Years ago. :) That law caused misunderstandings due to bad experiance of computer games to the authorities and people. The law intended to restrict pure "Lucky" Games on coin-op Slot machines, not lucky games on free machines, and not technical games (e.g. Ghost and Goblins) on free or coin-op slot machines. The restriction applied only at public areas, like cafe etc.

For private use there was no restriction, you were able to own a slot machine with a lucky games installed at home.

I remember after law appliance, cafe had lucky games for free to the enjoyment of customers. Nowadays the coin-op slot machines have completely vanquished. You may find them only at Casino.

Yap Law, corrected.

Mower, it may not obvious but intended to attack gambling. Rational or not, it has succeeded finally.

There are a lot of people all over the word that must be protected by their gambling addiction.

Now the main side effect was the disapearance of coin-op "technical" games also, but not a big deal since everyone owns a PC/Console/Mame etc.

If that includes stuff like the classic SEGA Rally coin-op dual-seat machines, then it is a big deal. :P (Me and a friend played those religiously and have some of the best laptimes in the country. :P )
