Hi:

 

Anyone come up with any useful tactics to lase from 4000m plus? I'm trying to stay above the low alt sam threat and to identify, lase and smart bomb or TV missle a bridge. I'm finding it challenging to id from a distance or to keep in gimbal limits for lasing once acquired.

Thats easy, lock the ground to stabilse then press a for auto pilot. The aircraft will line up and remain level. While thats happening you can move the TDC onto the target and get it exactly where you want it.

Yep-but my problem is keeping the camera within gimbal limits at long distances and for a good period of time. I was thinking stabilizing, locking up, then doing low speed s-turns or even a wide circle with the target at the center if that would work. Its a shame you can't overfly the target with the unit "flipping" but continuing to track, as with LANTIRN. Oh well, must acomplish the mission with the equipment at hand :)

Unfortuantely the unit is mounted in the nose, which causes unreconcilliable geomtrical issues with the whole 'flipping' thing ... I think your method of circling isn't bad though, and you can still drop TV-guided bombs from a fairly high altitude. And when in doubt, initiate a 5-deg descent for the drop, it'll keep the laser on target longer, but that;s only relevant for the laser-guided missiles.

 

You can break lock after launching TV-guided weapons.

or you could just take out the sams with your standoff missiles and do the bridge with dumb bombs. As for setting up for the run you only need about 10-12km. Most people like to use the AP but I just find I get better control on the attack run by manually trimming. If you still want to do it without taking out the sams my suggestion would be to use speed and lots of flares.
