Evil.Bonsai Posted August 15, 2011 Posted August 15, 2011 Reading through the manual, they present a pretty detailed procedure for pre-flight/start. In the ramp start tutorial, you don't do any of that. Is there ever a case when doing a ramp start, some of those switches, dials, etc. in random positions? I've already discovered I need to pre-flight my hotas: started a tutorial, was in autopilot; when ap shut off, plane went sideways in a hurry. didn't know what the hell was wrong until I ESC'd. Found I had my rudder turned full due to forgetting to reset after landing and taxiing. Would be interesting to start up a ramp start and find a random switch here and there in the wrong location.
EtherealN Posted August 15, 2011 Posted August 15, 2011 IRL, the crew chief goes through and prepares the cockpit. The only time something would be in a random position is if the crew chief is incompetent. However, the checklists would still call for the pilot to verify the position of switches - if it says Switch X on, this doesn't necessarily mean you should set the switch on, it means you should verify that it is on and, if it isn't, turn it on. It's like when I turn onto final IRL - I'll already have my gears out, but I'm still called upon to verify that the landing gear switch is down and locked. By doing this as a matter of routine, I have an extra chance to catch a mistake I might have made on my downwind in case I got saturated during that step by whatever. (A combination of crosswind adjustments, excessive radio traffic and whatever else might have been going on.) Snoopy Posted August 15, 2011 Posted August 15, 2011 As a real world A-10 crew chief like Ethereal said it is our responsibility to make sure the switches are in the correct positions prior to the pilot getting to the ACFT. That being said we're human and at times a switch is forgotten (pilots do it all the time too). v303d Fighter Group Discord | Virtual 303d Fighter Group Website

mvsgas Posted August 15, 2011 Posted August 15, 2011 (edited) What do you fly Ethereal? :) :D :smartass: He flies this. http://afbucket.s3.amazonaws.com/1950flyingbus.jpg here he is flying http://t0.gstatic.com/images?q=tbn:ANd9GcR-wN9C8SyIlWV0pIQRcE8b6c-fmWMqnFgCgxP-AFE4W6MNb8n1 Just kidding I don't know. As a Crew Chief, I love putting all the switches to OFF/Norm/safe and watch pilots get all confuse. Edited August 15, 2011 by mvsgas 1 To whom it may concern, I am an idiot, unfortunately for the world, I have a internet connection and a fondness for beer....apologies for that. Thank you for you patience. Many people don't want the truth, they want constant reassurance that whatever misconception/fallacies they believe in are true..
EtherealN Posted August 15, 2011 Posted August 15, 2011 LOL, that's just evil! :D As for what I fly - nothing glamorous. Gliders and light motorcraft, and it's all just recreational. Was originally thinking about trying for a CPL-H, but then I found out the costs of that (was something like 80k dollars), cross-referenced my bank account, and decided to let it be. :( 1 [sIGPIC][/sIGPIC] Daniel "EtherealN" Agorander | Даниэль "эфирныйн" Агорандер Intel i7 2600K @ 4.4GHz, ASUS Sabertooth P67, 8GB Corsair Vengeance @ 1600MHz, ASUS GTX 560Ti DirectCU II 1GB, Samsung 830series 512GB SSD, Corsair AX850w, two BENQ screens and TM HOTAS Warthog DCS: A-10C Warthog FAQ | DCS: P-51D FAQ | Remember to read the Forum Rules | | | Life of a Game Tester
Evil.Bonsai Posted August 15, 2011 Author Posted August 15, 2011 Checklist is there for you to use it. :D Don't yet have a checklist for my hotas, but I'm getting there. I've only had this sim a few days, but I'm getting back into the swing of SIMming. Heh, for Longbow2, I mad a laminated grid-map I could use with wipe-away markers. Drew out my flight map for each flight. Still have the manually printed manual here on the shelf. I'll get there yet! Next item on the list is absolutely a head tracker (will try the face/webcam tracker, but trackir is on the wishlist)
