KaspeR32 Posted September 1, 2011 Posted September 1, 2011 By 2.4, I'm sure you mean 3.4? ;) Your story isn't the whole one though - 990 has six cores, which will make it the better CPU for rendering jobs and scientific computing. (The triple-channel memory interface also helps in some applications, usually scientific or server oriented.) Yes sorry I meant 3.4 I edited that. And you're right just like overclocking RAM speed wouldn't really matter for games either. But for the OP's purpose, and gaming in general, the new sandy-bridge is a no-brainer. (I'm not waiting for anything besides to stop traveling and actually spend my money on a new PC.) Icarus2 Posted September 1, 2011 Posted September 1, 2011 i7 990X Extreme @ 3.46GHz, 130W -$999 i7 2600K @ 3.4GHz (3.8GHz Turbo), 95W - $314 Better CPU for less, why wait? I agree with that, but they are both SandyBridge. I'm waiting for IvyBridge (March/April), which promise to be WAY faster than any SandyBridge.
EtherealN Posted September 2, 2011 Posted September 2, 2011 I agree with that, but they are both SandyBridge. No, they're not both Sandy. 990X is a Westmere. (32nm version of Nehalem.) The 990 does have turbo too though, which his chart failed to show (it turbos to 3.7GHz)- I'm waiting for IvyBridge (March/April), which promise to be WAY faster than any SandyBridge. If by "WAY faster" you mean roughly 20% per clock, yeah. :P There's no arguing against the fact that Ivy will be really good stuff, but it won't be revolutionary. I'll still be tempted to get one when they are released of course, but I'll probably try to have the fortitude to just wait a little bit and get whatever is next - because no matter what, there's always something better a couple months over the horizon. Cali Posted September 2, 2011 Posted September 2, 2011 From my experiences, if I wait, I don't get it. Cali you still running the setup in your sig? If so, I'm running something similar, just have it OCed. The game actually plays ok to be honest with you, but I've been so tempted since sandy bridge came out because of how cheap it is. The Q6600 to a i5 2500k would be very noticeable I think. Yes that is the system I still run and it runs FC2 and DCS-BS very good, which surprises me. I don't have anything OCed with almost everything turned up in FC2 except mirrors, heat blur and vis range. I get about 25-30 on the ground and higher in the air. I can turn mirrors on and have done it a few times, but I have not seen the benefit of them for me vs FPS yet, so they are back off now. I can't wait til I have the money to buy a new system though. I have other stuff I need to do first though. i7-4820k @ 3.7, Windows 7 64-bit, 16GB 1866mhz EVGA GTX 970 2GB, 256GB SSD, 500GB WD, TM Warthog, TM Cougar MFD's, Saitek Combat Pedals, TrackIR 5, G15 keyboard, 55" 4K LED
emenance Posted September 8, 2011 Posted September 8, 2011 The only thing good about winter is that I get to do some serious flying again. Unfortunatly I am going to retire the q6600 rig to the living room after 4 years of great service. Cali it helps alot that you are on vista or win 7 64 bit. Those OS handle the memory , virtual memory in a different way, much better than XP! Cali Posted September 8, 2011 Posted September 8, 2011 Winter time will bring more flying for me also, well hopefully. I loved XP, until I got W7 and saw how good it was. It always sucks waiting for things to be compatible with new OS though. i7-4820k @ 3.7, Windows 7 64-bit, 16GB 1866mhz EVGA GTX 970 2GB, 256GB SSD, 500GB WD, TM Warthog, TM Cougar MFD's, Saitek Combat Pedals, TrackIR 5, G15 keyboard, 55" 4K LED
