Guys,

I purchased the Thrustmaster controller. I have been waiting for the boxed version to be released but decided to get it on line.

I think I missed the sale.... since the download takes about two hours I do not have enough time in the evening to baby sit the download. I was going to use Steam but just when I was going to put in my credit card number I hit cancel and aborted it...it was getting late.

My question is after you purchase the download do you have to download it right then or can you wait and do it at a later time? Do they issue you at the time of purchase a coded number or something that is usable later?

I just dont like the idea of purchasing software and not having a hard copy. What if I want to transfer it to another machine, what can you do?

When you buy from either ED or Steam you can download at a later time, or any time over and over. They both issue a serial number/key at time of purchase.

Moving it to another machine is no issue either, I take it that you have not used Steam before. I have Steam and Steam games installed on multiple machines with no problems. Same with my A-10 which I got directly from ED.

In short. Just do it. No worries.:D

EDIT:

If it makes you more comfortable. Here is the direct download link for the latest english version from ED

There are four files. Download them at you leisure, one at a time if that is all the time you have at a given moment. Then once you are comfortable that you can download at will, make the purchase.

I don't mean to thread jack but are there any advantages and disadvantages from purchasing straight from ED or Steam?

Besides the price difference of course.

They both have the same key, but you can import the one from Digitalcombatsimulator.com to Steam. You can however use the Steam key with the Digitalcombatsimulator.com download.

Buying the game straight from ED gives a larger share of the price and there have been delays on Steam patches of the game so I would say you are better off with the Digitalcombatsiumulator.com download.

Indeed, the money thing is nice for ED and for us in the long run.;)

I don't have this one on Steam but based on the threads here the patch on Steam took a long time to get there. You can patch a steam game directly also if you needed to but if you are counting on Steam for updates you will be behind.

I just checked the dates. ED put the 0.9 patch out on 7-23. It was available on Steam around 8-11.

Your call on that score.:D

Ah I see. I guess direct from ED is the way to go. I like Steam because of the whole social network on their and I can chat along with my friends.

That won't work with A-10 anyway, assuming you are on a 64bit OS.

The Steam overlay is a 32bit app and does not work if you have the 64bit version of the game, which is really the only version that functions completely. The version that installs is automatically determined by the OS so if you have a 64bit OS that is the version that will install.

The game will run on a 32bit OS but there are limitations. On a 32bit OS I assume the Steam overlay would work but I don't know of anyone who has done it.

You can download anytime you like, as many times as you like.

You can actually download it before you purchase - you just won't be able to activate it without a license key.

Essentially, think of it like this: you are not purchasing a copy of the simulator - you are purchasing a license to use the simulator. This license is personal - it is linked to you as an individual, not a specific computer, time or DVD. The license is associated with a license number - a "key" - that is used to activate the product on your computer. This key gets issued to your account on payment.

I just dont like the idea of purchasing software and not having a hard copy. What if I want to transfer it to another machine, what can you do?

You have several ways:

One obvious one is to just backup your installer files - save them to a DVD, a thumbdrive or whatever.

The other is to just download it again. ;)

There are two modes of download offered - either direct download from ED servers (both FTP and HTTP protocols available, and multiple locations), or the official bittorrent. Both available through the download pages on digitalcombatsimulator.com.
