i bought a second hand x-52 from ebay earlier this year and have to say i have really been enjoying the stick. Recently however it has started acting up; firstly i get the whole becoming unresponsive thing and when i alt-tab out of a-10c to restart the software i often get a CTD from the game (very frustrating when you have been flying a mission for over an hour). Secondly and more bizarrely the mfd on the x-52 has gone haywire. right now it says

mode

no prifile

which should be

mode 1

no profile

the way the characters screw up is random. My dcs:a-10 profile is called a-10c beta, but sometimes it displays teta or tata instead of beta and mede/made instead of mode (you get the idea). i have reinstalled the software and been in touch with saitek about it but nothing has helped. Now i know i can assign the buttons through the game itself but then i can not use the mouse stick for the slew controls (is there a way round this?) which is a pain in the ass. Has anyone experienced similar problems to this and found a resolution?

I would like to purchase the TM warthog but i'm wondering if i can justify the £275 + £~100 pedals. I think my missus would kill me :helpsmilie:

We'll I was in the same boat as you with issues from lcd screen to lights flashing off and on..etc. All I can say is you get what you pay for, and you won't regret it for one second if you do invest in the WH. The quality is second to none! I felt the same way as you prior to purchasing the WH but once you adapt to it there is no turning back. "dont think twice JUST DO IT"

Only problem I see with the THWH is if you fly other jets the throttle is just silly with the Hawg specific buttons.

The MFD text thing is just something I ignore. It does not affect function in my case. Now if you have flashing lights, the first thing to suspect is the cable between the units. I had to replace mine right out of the box. The internal connectors are the next suspect there.

To use the mouse stick for slew you need to use the SST software to set up bands on the axis and then program the four commands into those bands. You can also leave the mouse axis unprogrammed and then program it like a four way hat but then you will only be able to move the slew along the horizontal and vertical.

As far as the title of your post...I would not be much help arguing against it. My Warthog arrives tomorrow!:D

Didn't that throttle come from the F-15E?;)

Note: All buttons can be remapped to your likings with included TARGET software or in game options. no different than what you have now. :)

thanks guys. I always feel a bit sick when i spend large sums of money on things that i don't need to stay alive. It is sooo temtpting as i do (kind of) have the cash spare. maybe i can just convince the missus that i only cost £50 :smilewink:

@cichlidfan

i have the slew controls set up fine in the SST and i love my profile but i was wondering if there is a way of setting up the slew to the mouse stick directly in the game? doesn't seem so.

The unprogrammed route I mentioned is the only way I was able to do it in game and that has the noted limitations. In fact, that is the only thing I have in the profile. The rest is in game or just not used (i.e. mode switch).

Regarding the other, I know what you mean. I can afford it and could have when I bought the X-52 but I have that same issue about spending some times. The only reason I broke down was I found it last week on special for $350. The problem with trying to put one over on the wife is that it looks expensive in the first place.

Good luck!

This is a problem with the drivers and Windows 7 64 bit.

It has been reported a long time ago and only recently it has been acknowledged as an incompatibility problem with Windows 7 64 bit. They are working on a fix for that.

A workaround for that is to use the back USB ports and not use it on HUBS or FRONT CASE USB ports.

It has worked for some and not for others. In my case, the problem still remains after complete driver uninstallation and reinstallation even if using the back USB ports.

I have had this joystick for over 2 years and have used it for hundreds and hundreds of flying hours. It's still in impeccable condition, except for the nagging "profele" problem. Hardware-wise it's still tip-top.

Are there PRO and non-PRO models out there that fail after 2 weeks of use? Of course there are, just as there are 400-dollar Thrustmaster Warthogs that become paper weights due to firmware problems, just as there are X65 with sensor problems, just as there are G940 with throttle wiring problems.

Not for a minute you should think that by spending the price of 4 X52 PRO in a joystick you'll be automatically excluded from the fact that you too can become statistics on faulty hardware. That's the number one reason for disappointment down the line. :smartass:

This is one of the threads in which the problem was reported ==> http://www.saitekforum.com/showthread.php?t=19182

Hi, we are working on the problem seems to be a windows7 64bit problem.

we have replicated the problem here, also try pugging in the X52Pro in to the rear USB port, do not use a hub or side/front USB ports. this I found helps.

And now answering your question... :smilewink:

Buy a HOTAS WARTHOG IF:

1) You don't mind spending $400 on a joystick.

2) You can afford to spend another $80 on a set of pedals.

3) You want more realism and immersion.

Say yes to all three of them and you're good to go. :joystick: :pilotfly: :smartass:

you have made a very fair point dok and to be fair i am well aware of the issues people have been having with the warthog. I think i have been trying to ignore them as..... well, lets face it, i want one :joystick:

my x-52 is plugged into the mobo and have tried all the workarounds i can find.

i'll sleep on it a few days and then we will see what i do :pilotfly:

I'll let the Gaming Nexus review convince you:

to realize the full, vast potential of DCS A-10C, you’re going to need some hardware. It’s probably obvious with a flight sim that you’re going to need a TrackIR head position sensor, and it should be at least equally as obvious that you’re going to need a good flight stick, rudder pedals, and throttle quadrant. The problem is that not just any flight stick/throttle quadrant will do. To utilize the ultra-high fidelity of the DCS A-10C aircraft controls, you really need an ultra-high fidelity A-10 controller. The cost of the completely replicated systems and switchology of the actual A-10 in the DCS A-10C is that you need a complete replica of at least the throttles and joystick. The actual A-10 employs a HOTAS (Hands On Throttle And Stick) methodology in its design of the weapons management controls, and this methodology is more complex than the standard generic joysticks you are used to can provide. The bottom line is that you need a Thrustmaster HOTAS Warthog system to truly operate this simulation satisfactorily. At more than $450 street, that’s a pretty steep demand. And it doesn’t come with rudder pedals. You’ll need to throw some more dollars at CH or Saitek for those.

This isn’t to say that you can’t get by with a good Logitech flight stick and the keyboard, but attempting to do so will add layers of frustration to the process. Do you remember the three days that it took me to launch a missile? Those three days were spent struggling to get a good mapping set up for my Logitech G940. Once I got access to a Thrustmaster HOTAS, I was able to better follow the in-game tutorials as they described the switches I needed to use to arm, aim, and annihilate. The difference was night and day. The integration between the HOTAS stick and DCS A-10C is so tight and easy, it’s as if they were designed in conjunction with each other.

From http://www.gamingnexus.com/Article/DCS-A-10C/Item3139.aspx

As a Warthog owner I can tell you that the step from the Saitek X52 to the Warthog (even without pedals at the time) was amazing. I become 10x the pilot with the new HOTAS system. Flying was more precise, I had far more control over the plane, weapons employment become a breeze.

Yes it's super expensive, but for flying the A-10C it's simply the best solution there is. Dok's three points are spot on however. But really, #3 trumps them all. :)

I sure hope I feel that way. I convinced myself to do it (a really good price helped). My X-52 Pro is only six months old and I have a pretty good profile for it.

I try to take note of, but not dwell on, the problems that some people have had and am hoping for the best, obviously, on that score.

Another upside is that it will look cool as sh** on my desk!!:D

well i took the plunge, managed to find a returned WH on amazon for £200 (lets hope it functions properly) and got some saitek combat pedals.

even managed to convince my partner that my x-52 was breaking and i desperately need a new stick , told her it was a bargain price as a bundle.... she'll never now :music_whistling:

Congrats. It will probably work just fine. It was probably returned because someone else's significant other found out what it cost!:D

Next to the Warthog, your X52 will look broken anyway.

Now I just have to drill eight new holes in my desk. BTW, the throttle control is amazing.

Sorry Mower, but I find that a lazy man's excuse. The buttons are... (wait for it..).. Buttons! You can use them for button assigments! Just because they are layed out as they are, and labeled as they are does not mean they are not useable or something, right?

Well i haven't had too much time to play with it as yet as i've been out all day. Initial impressions however are ....."OMFG it's awesome" :megalol:

Told you so!:P

It is heavy but I will be bolting mine to the desk this afternoon. It was nice and stable with A-10, although you can lift the throttle pulling the levers over the idle detent. However, my first ROF dogfight told me that the stick still needs to be attached.:D
