Advisable, yes. Mandatory, definitely not. You can utilize team-chat in-SIM function but that takes time, especially if you suffer from 'fat-fingers' during combat as I usually do :)

As an aside, if you prefer a headset mic without the speakers as I do, relying on external surround sound, then have a look at the following as a reliable and cheap option:

Should be able to find them on E-Bay over on your side of the Pond. Added bonus is that the TrackIr clip also fits well on the headset.

Alternatively, you can have the teamspeak sounds go through your headset if your system allows it, and your headset. I.e. it has to be a headset, with speakers (dûh :P) that can be used independently on your system, for instance on the front jacks of your case if it's a 3.5mm headset, but I believe it's possible also via USB, but I've got no experience with that.

 

In this way you have the aircraft going through your speakers, and teamspeak chatter via your headset, which I personally find very preferable.
