Bee_Sting Posted September 28, 2011 Posted September 28, 2011 I tried out for the first time a HOJ with both the AIM-7 and AIM-120 against a Mig29. We both were approaching head-on and not once was I succesful in making a kill. I tried this numerous times at different ranges and still no luck ... i even noticed that the Mig29 wasnt even taking any evasive maneouvers. Anyone else have luck with the HOJ shot or did you fail abysmally like i did? what should be done?:joystick:

So its already a low PK shot to begin with. :) [sIGPIC][/sIGPIC]
Bee_Sting Posted September 28, 2011 Author Posted September 28, 2011 (edited) HOJ kills are for slow moving aircraft rather than high moving aircraft. if you fire in HOJ will the aircraft get a warning signal? Edited September 28, 2011 by Bee_Sting

golfsierra2 Posted September 28, 2011 Posted September 28, 2011 I don't think so. The warning is initiated by locking the target with the AI radar before, it's not because of the HOJ missile approaching. kind regards, Raven.... [sigpic]http://www.crc-mindreader.de/CRT/images/Birds2011.gif[/sigpic]
Pilotasso Posted September 28, 2011 Posted September 28, 2011 But its not the way the radar actually works IRL. There is no warning, not even when you burn through if the mode selected is TWS. .
FLANKERATOR Posted September 28, 2011 Posted September 28, 2011 Isn't the missile's Active radar giving a warning when turning Pitbull ? Shouldn't it be burning trough ECM at such distance? Situational Awareness: https://sa-sim.com/ | The Air Combat Dojo: https://discord.gg/Rz77eFj
RIPTIDE Posted September 28, 2011 Posted September 28, 2011 But its not the way the radar actually works IRL. There is no warning, not even when you burn through if the mode selected is TWS. All depends on the ECM gear the aggressor is using I suppose. [sIGPIC][/sIGPIC]
Cali Posted September 28, 2011 Posted September 28, 2011 HOJ shots do work online, don't know why it didn't work for you Bee sting. I had a HOJ kill a few weeks/months ago, a F-15 was up high above 40k with his jammers on. I knew who it was. I fired from at least 40nm away, I was high also, so I knew my missile would do well, I wasn't expecting to get a kill though. I fired hold the lock for maybe 5-10 seconds, then broke away. A few minutes later the server said I killed him, I told him I fired a HOJ shot from about 40nm away, he just flew right into it. Maybe he was away from his computer, I don't know, he didn't say anything about it. Point is.......HOJ kills do happen. i7-4820k @ 3.7, Windows 7 64-bit, 16GB 1866mhz EVGA GTX 970 2GB, 256GB SSD, 500GB WD, TM Warthog, TM Cougar MFD's, Saitek Combat Pedals, TrackIR 5, G15 keyboard, 55" 4K LED
Pilotasso Posted September 28, 2011 Posted September 28, 2011 (edited) Isn't the missile's Active radar giving a warning when turning Pitbull ? Shouldn't it be burning trough ECM at such distance? The ECM implementation in FC2 is extremely simplified and thus there are many ommissions. The missiles go active at roughly 13 miles (but I think in FC2 its linked to timing rather than distance, someone correct me if wrong). When outside pitbull range, the AMRAAM might be following you passively like an anti radiation missile but when it reaches its seeker activation point in FC2, ECM ceases to have any effect. It will give warning at this point no matter if ECM is off or on. It seems ECM is completely ignored once the missile is guiding itself. Summing it up: HOJ shots do not seem to influence missile lock warning, only its methods to reach you at pitbull point. This is strictly scripted in FC2, so again, it should be taken with a grain of salt. Wait for DCS: fighters :) Edited September 28, 2011 by Pilotasso .
Cali Posted September 29, 2011 Posted September 29, 2011 I think pilotasso is right. I know when someone has fired at TWS 120 at me and it goes active, there is still plenty of time to react. To bad we can't til from a tacview when the 120 goes active. Maybe there is a way, maybe you see the missile turn or do something that gives you a little sign. Maybe run a few test and at 13nm from the target watch to see what the missile goes. I don't have time to test these things out, when I get a chance to fly, that's what I'm going to do. Maybe next time I see that guy in a server I'll ask him about that kill, if he remembers it. i7-4820k @ 3.7, Windows 7 64-bit, 16GB 1866mhz EVGA GTX 970 2GB, 256GB SSD, 500GB WD, TM Warthog, TM Cougar MFD's, Saitek Combat Pedals, TrackIR 5, G15 keyboard, 55" 4K LED
GGTharos Posted September 29, 2011 Posted September 29, 2011 There should be a warning depending on circumstances. The ECM will light up because you're being targeted - literally it reacts to the RWR warning you. Should you get a missile launch warning? Not in HoJ, and not even in STT - the warning should come not from the act of launching the missile, with the exception of some very particular and probably no longer modern systems - but from the signal being a) in STT, b) being of particular identification and c) being of sufficient power to be in the 'threat zone'. In other words, most sims probably get this one wrong. Finally, no sim simulates ECM and ECCM well. Not even close. Burn-through against a main-lobe jammer? LOL. :P But its not the way the radar actually works IRL. There is no warning, not even when you burn through if the mode selected is TWS.
