Tailgate Posted January 5, 2012 Posted January 5, 2012 So real A-10 drivers use binoculars? That's really hands off flying.
Eddie Posted January 5, 2012 Posted January 5, 2012 Many military pilots in the A/G role use binoculars and the plain Mk1 eyeball as their primary tools. Even with RADAR and targeting pods, sometimes your own eyes are the best tool for the job. Over Libya our pilots, both in the Tornados and the Typhoons carried and used gyro stabilised binoculars. Targeting pods are great tools, but using them to search large areas when you don't know exactly where to look is a bit like looking at the world through a drinking straw. But as other have mentioned, a good, accurate briefing is the main tool of military aviation. On the vast majority of missions, pilots know exactly where they are going and what they are going to do. COIN operations such as Afghanistan are the exception in combat aviation, not the rule.
Mojeaux Posted January 5, 2012 Posted January 5, 2012 So if you were to go the extra mile here. You can use "Speeds" slmod...then you can use the " LOS function (line of sight to a specific radious target!) and when your doing your search and destroy missions then you come into range of said targets, the mod will give you the MGRS or LL coordinates to that set of targets either in chat or text text form, standing still or moving.. I just haven't had that much luck gettin JTAC to work like it should (bugs!). But heck..if the JTAC was working good we really wouldn't need the slmod so much for that purpose. Sooo I feel your pain my friend... [sIGPIC][/sIGPIC]
RobbySpike Posted January 6, 2012 Posted January 6, 2012 I find it much easier to spot ground units when all the eyecandy shadows/effects and stuff is turned on. Maybe thats the point?! I also think in reality the environment looks even more distinct and sharp. So, I dare to say that this sims visual part is even harder than reality. Beside that, I'm also pretty sure, that small objects are culled invisible by the 3d engine when the distance between plane/object becomes too large. Kula66 Posted January 6, 2012 Posted January 6, 2012 Try and get your wingman to engage the target and see where he shoots ... he has uber-vision!
Tailgate Posted January 6, 2012 Posted January 6, 2012 Hey, I'll volunteer to go down and bait some SAMS. Apparently that's one of my strengths so far in the this Sim. Surviving is a different story. "Sambait" sounds like a pretty good callsign.
