Hello

Thinking about replacing my ATI 5870 with an Nvidia 580, have done some searching through the forums and came across this thread regarding relative performances:-

http://forums.eagle.ru/showthread.php?t=63270&highlight=ati&page=2

The results of the above comparison tests (post 19) seem like it's a worth while upgrade.

I run a dual monitor setup with a total resolution of 1920X2130 (22" monitor placed on top of a 23" monitor).

Just have a couple of questions:-

I was just wondering would there be any benefit to buying a 3Gb version of the Nvidia 580 or would the 1.5Gb run ok for this resolution ?.

I run in windowed mode due to my dual monitor setup, are the Nvidia cards able to run in windowed mode ok ???.....have always used ATI cards...

I'm only interested in a single GPU card, i've heard thet the HD 7970 is due for release.......maybe i should just wait for now ???...

Thanks for any advice...

Cheers Gunner...

Depends how the HD7970 will be priced... it will overclock well, be very power efficient and not as noisy as 580 and will beat it in any game... overclocked it get quite close to dual GPU cards also so really... I would prefer the HD7970 and this is what I am waiting for myself. Not to mention it can run more then 2 monitors and 3GB of vRAM will come in handy.

PC specs:

I run the same screen setup and use fullscreen, do you have to use window for any particular reason?

At this stage of the game I'd be holding off for the new stuff like 7xxx or whatever is coming from nvidia. ATI certainly have the edge on multi-monitor setup.

Hello

I think the HD7970 is due to be released over here in the UK very soon and will be priced in the region of around 470 pounds, (700 Dollars AUS).........rather alot of money !!!!...

As i'm in no hurry i think i will just hang on and see how the release of this new card effects the Nvidia/ATI pricings.

Spikenet.....How do you manage to run a dual monitor setup in fullscreen ?, are you using SoftTH ?.

Thanks...

no, I tried softth but had constant crashing, now just use eyefinity.

I use a keyboard shortcut to turn it on before playing the game, then off after. Very simple and works great. I get around 30fps+ with everything maxed out using 6950+2500k.

ps: there is a new version of softth witch works now but I'm happy with eyefinity for now.

Just my two cents.

I am running a two screens also, 2560x1440 and 1920x1080. With some games I see GPU-Z showing memory use hovering steadily around the 2GB memory use mark.
