Hello, I am new to A10C and have started in game mode. I eventually figured out the air to ground weapons, but I can't get my AIM9s to work at all! I will have a target locked in and fully zoomed in on the right side display, yet i can never get the high-pitch sound of a lock even at prime range. What am I doing wrong, the quickstart guide is useless. :helpsmilie:

You realise that an AIM-9 is an air to air weapon right? It will not engage ground targets. Set up a mission with a few enemy helos and you'll be able to send flaming telegraph poles their way in a heartbeat :p

I should have worded it better, I KNOW AIM9s are AA! (Hence the title of the thread). I figured they would work like AGM-65s but whenever I fire one it just goes straight ahead even with a lock on the IR display. (obviously I'm locked on to a helicopter). Also, on the display whenever i switch it to AA mode it loses its lock, so I hit O to relock onto the air target and it automatically reverts to AG mode.

ForeverN00b, a track file is the easiest way for us to see what you are doing wrong. (Though I admit I am not very familiar with game mode.) Note though that the display (the "MFCD") does not show what your missile is showing, and having something locked there only means your TGP is looking at it - not your AIM9! To make your AIM-9 look where your TGP is looking, you'll want China Forward Long with AIM9 SOI. (See pages 91-92 of the manual. Note that the missile does not necessarily have the ability to scan as wide as the TGP.) Another option is to simply keep the missile boresighted and place whatever you want to shoot on the sight in the hud.

However, I'm not sure to what extent the above applies in game mode. Generally, I'd suggest using the interactive tutorials, with the manual pages as a backup - especially pages 86 through 93 are wonderful for reference while learning, printing those (or having them on a tablet) can save you a lot of worry.

Thank you, I will give that a try and a read! I looked thru the manual but I looked in a different spot than what you are talking about. The step I was missing was the China forward, I got it working now. Thanks for your help. :)

Just for clarity, "AA" typically refers to ground-based Anti-Aircraft weaponry. The acronym "AAM" (I have also seen "A2A", though I don't think it's too common) stands for "Air-to-Air Missile".

It can also refer to Alcoholics Anonymous, but that probably wouldn't belong in a discussion of military aviation.
