There's a reason I don't play FSX and that's because I don't want to have to pay $40+ for every plane, ever airport, every paint scheme, every map, every vehicle, every era, every upgrade, every plane variation, every weapon, every radar system, every guide, every video...

If DCS is gonna start slipping into a payware-for-every-little-thing model I can certainly see my interest dropping. Paying ED for super high quality aircraft every few years is just great. Paying 5 different developers for one or two little things every few months... never.

There's already been a thread about how much DCS A-10C has cost people and for many of us it's been over a $1000 including all the peripheral purchases. I'm happy stopping there and not becoming one of the guys who says "I've spent 10,000 on DCS mods"... Especially if most of that money isn't going to ED to make the next DCS game better.

??

Actually for the FS-series there is plenty of free 3rd-party content, and this is also true for X-Plane (also providing an open sim-environment).

Some of the payware-AddOns are amazing, but this is also true for some of the Freeware-Addons. Both were just made possible by providing an "open" environment (SDK), encouraging people to contribute.

If you (understandably) don't want to buy any Payware-Addon, just don't. That is the beauty of it: ED can concentrate on the "core"-values, while others can take care of the "smaller" things/details. And I am sure, there will be plenty of freeware-contributions - just as nowadays people are uploading their minutely designed missions for free. :)

Hey-hey-hey!(hold your horses!)

Before starting another flame-war against/pro paid contend ...

I just want to remind you all that all added aircraft's have to be working in a multi-player (combat) environment. - and I think that ED/TFC will have a sharp eye on this.

Because its the Key-feature of DCS

But I can believe that ED/TFC doesn't care what add-on you will use off-line.

So no one has to fear.

So don't pay for anything? You haven't paid for anything from 3rd parties so far and you are not required to in the future if you do not want their stuff.

If you do find a piece of third party content you really want you cannot begrudge them for asking something for their work? If it's good enough for you to want it then there was probably a lot of time and effort put in to it.

As was also pointed out for every ecosystem that has paidware there is also a lot of good freeware and sometimes the freeware exceeds the payware.
