Hello :)

Not really a problem...Just seems somewhat strange to me..

why does the DAY setting for the HUD work better with NVGs than

the NIGHT setting does.

Should that not be the other way around ?

With the DAY setting i don't have to gain down the NVGs and dim down the HUD as much to get a sharp hud display as i do with NIGHT mode on..

Maybe the NIGHT setting is just meant to be without NVGs? Simple as that? Cannot see any other explanation.

Anyway, with NVGs I always use DAY setting. Looks so much better.

According to paulrkiii, the night mode stems from the time before NVGs were used extensively.

Good, fast, cheap. Choose any two.

Yeah, makes sense.

Reddish color doesn't bust your normal "night vision" - red light is such that eye doesn't adapt it self to bright light so easily when using red light.

But it's closer to Infra-red and as such is probably worse for the NVGs? :)

EDIT:

Use the "INTEN" (intensity) setting on the UFC to control HUD brightness at night.

(but you already knew that)

The NVG sensitivity is highest for near infrared light wavelenght and drops gradually as the wavelenght gets longer or shorter. So NVG will amplify red light more than blue light. Green is closer to blue than orange and hence is amplified less. This is also the reason why Ka-50 NVG cockpit light is purple so that you can see the instruments with both naked eye and NVGs without adjusting lighting or NVG gain.
